Happy Canada Day to those who celebrate.

I went out to dinner with my Canadian brother tonight and turned my outdoor lights to red and white.

That’s been the extent of my celebration.

This thread is chilling. Good grief, Canada.

I've been watching this same issue evolve in the UK. I've wondered how long it will take for it to come to our own shores. It's one of those issues we discussed in our debate class in high school 40 years ago. It's probably only a matter of time before it makes its way to the US as well.

                    God forbid.

A doctor repeatedly asking a woman with a recent breast cancer diagnosis if she has considered suicide? That is evil.

I think it will take much longer to take root here, but public opinion can change quickly. Yeah that story is nuts.

Physician assisted suicide is legal in something like 10 states already. Are you referring to something specific other than that?

Yes, I'm talking more about elective dying beyond terminally ill patients. But as you point out, perhaps it's already here. Perhaps it will simply become more culturally acceptable.

Firstly, I vehemently disagree with assisted suicide. In response to the alarmist tone of the article in the Atlantic, it is important to note 95.9% of individuals seeking assisted suicide are terminally ill, primarily dealing with Cancer. Again, I do not agree with assisted suicide. My mother is currently in hospice care in Utah. The past few months have been miserable watching her deteriorate. She has had a leg amputated just below the knee due to gangrene and complications from diabetes. She can barely see. She is incontinent. She barely eats. At times she is quite lively and lucid; most of the time she shows signs of dementia. Regardless, I do not agree with assisted suicide.

Roughly four years ago, my father died of pancreatic cancer. He outlived the given prognosis of three to six months by a year. I nursed him on his death bed—changed his diaper and at the end administered morphine. End of life is awful to witness first hand over the course of three weeks. I still deal with some PTSD from the experience. I still do not agree with assisted suicide.

Putting the alarmist tone of the Atlantic article in a Canadian context, my Canadian in-laws are old—my father in law is 96 but still active as Stake Patriarch. He ambles about like he is 85—still drives. My mother in-law is 87 and is really struggling the past couple of months with health issues. She is losing her mobility due to neurological issues. But she is still active as she can be and teaches Relief Society on occasion.

In their Ward is a 108 year old man who was formerly the Spanish speaking Stake Patriarch. His son was our Stake President. This son and his siblings dutifully care for their father. Also in my in-laws ward are another couple, parents of our close friends, who are roughly the same age as my in-laws. They are quickly losing their mobility. They can no longer travel like they once did. They are still as active as they can be with family and at church.

Not one of these aged, suffering from various ailments and who have lost or who are at imminent threat of losing their independence have been asked by a physician about assisted suicide. We have friends and acquaintances who work in cancer centres. They do not ask about assisted suicide—it is not a part of their work.

There are currently ten US states, including the District of Columbia, that have laws allowing for physician assisted suicide. While the thread spurred by the article might be chilling, maybe what is being shared is not completely accurate.

Canada law (MAID) is more permissive than any of the US states that allow it. For example, US states generally require a terminal diagnosis with six months or less to live. Canada does not have such a requirement. It just has to "grevious and irredeemable". I.e., it is not going away.

Canada alows the doctor to kill the patient. US states allow doctor to provide lethal medication, but the patient has to self-administer.

Canada allows non-terminal conditions such as mental illness alone. (this is inexcusable).

Also, the fact that you have not personally witnessed a doctor recommending MAID does not mean it isn't happening.

MAID is not a Dr.'s choice—end of discussion on that.

Individuals whose only medical condition is mental health cannot choose assisted suicide (access MAID)—end of discussion on that.

It's like I am arguing with a FOX news devotee from a country where—currently—jack booted, masked enforcement officers can arrest people based exclusively on their race, the languages they speak other than English, and locations they might frequent.

                                Seriously. For reference:
