I know you don't mean it this way, but it irritates me to no end when people make that argument in defending Trump, arguing that it was no big deal. We don't let a would-be murderer off the hook because he's stupid and a really lousy shot.

It was a coup attempt but it was never going to be a real coup. Like you said, no one other than a bunch of crazy people and ultra conserative politicians went along with it. It was DOA. It was horrible, but the republic was never in real jeopardy.

I get what you are saying but some of the members of Congress escaped the House and Senate floors within about a minute of the crazy mob crashing in. It could have gotten extremely ugly very easily...but for the grace of God...

It was certainly a very serious event and it has driven a wedge (Trump drove the wedge) between the people of the company. But I agree with Moli that the republic itself was not in any real jeopardy. Not to say it couldn't have escalated to a more perilous point if enough people didn't step up. But fortunately they did. There may not be people willing to do that a second time around. Those people are all leaving congress in droves.

This is why people refuse to engage with you. You frame arguments in ways that only you can win, and then always claim victory. We can't have an honest discussion if you have already narrowed the focus to a single issue. Here, you have already determined that the only "successful answer" is a response that doesn't give Trump an "advantage" (as if that term weren't incredibly vague).

The people leaving in droves are not the crazy ones. I like that Republicans are leaving congress, but I'm not going to celebrate until I see who replaces them.

Agreed, and that's the problem. The "good" ones (in quotes in case fusnik reads this) are jumping ship and only "bad" ones appear eager to take their places. There won't be principled voices (even though there were only a handful the first time) to stand up against the crazies a second time.
