You gotta swing the bat. The Pence sentiment will change if/when he wins Iowa. The support he got from all the candidates on stage last night for upholding the constitution is evidence of that. Post Roe v Wade, nearly 24 states have some type of abortion ban in place. The Supreme Court is doing what it should be doing. The US is and always will be a centre-right nation. And while I am happy with Biden and feel he was the right person for this unique moment in history, at this point he is a liability. He is too old. There are signs of dementia. He and those around him lack the self-awareness to withdraw from the election.

I didn't see much of the debate, but enough to see he is the only one that looks presidential. He also has the most experience. Haily, or Scott are well positioned to be solid VP picks. With Christie acting as attack dog, and Ramaswamy acting as the media's new shinny thing, people are already learning to neither hate or love Pence. His current situation reminds me a little of Biden's primary journey. If you remember, there was no early support for Biden until the Democrats eventually came to their senses. I can see the same thing happening here.

EDIT: It would also be the ultimate smack down of Trump to nominate Pence. I can see people voting for him simply to say screw you to Trump. I'd consider it.

Don't expect the Republican electorate to "come to their senses". Also, it was less about the Democrats coming to their senses and more the national party trying to prevent Bernie Sanders from taking the nomination, resulting in the non-Bidens dropping out after Biden performed well in South Carolina.

                That sounds apt.

                • I didn't watch the debate, but I watched the CNN post debate coverage, I listened to the Daily episode, and I listened to the NPR Politics Podcast analysis.

Vivek came across as the nutjob lunatic I think he is, DeSantis faded like a plucked flower in the heat, and as far as the above shows were concerned, Burgman, Huchtinson and Scott weren't even on the stage. Pence was more forceful than I think most expected, but it still seems like "programming", not authenticity. I was most surprised by Haley. I thought her attack on Vivek's stand on Ukraine was excellent.

                    • But can I just say how good it feels to have candidates talking about real issues again?

That's what I thought back in 2016 when Trump sat out one of the debates because he got his feelings hurt by Megan Kelly or something. But it didn't matter.

Right. This time won't matter either. But I still like it.

I did have the thought that this debate would have been vastly different if Trump were on the stage, even if he didn't say a word. I would to hear the difference in, say, Mike Pence's responses if he knew that Trump was staring him down from across the stage. I would LOVE to hear all the candidates respond to the "would you pardon Trump" question while standing next to the man himself.

Exactly! Hence the 1% support of the republican electorate.

                              • Vivek is self-described as a "contrarian who loves to debate." I think maybe he just loves saying crap. He's clearly a brilliant guy, but that definitely =/= a great or even good presidential candidate. I think he would be a disaster.
