It seems some want to dismiss Trumps victory last night as not meaningful because Rick Santorum and Ted Cruz won the last meaningful Iowa caucuses and didn't sniff winning the nomination.
The problem with that is Cruz won it with 26.67% of the vote and Rick Santorum barely edged out Romney with 24.56%. In fact, on caucus night, it was widely accepted that Mitt won.
So, with 51% of the vote in the first contest, it is pretty hard to dismiss the chasm between Trump and his challengers.
Something will need to happen, and votes will need to dramatically swing for anyone else to have any kind of shot to win. At this point, I don't know what would cause Trump voters to change their mind. Trump wasn't that far off when he said he could shoot someone on Fifth avenue and wouldn't lose any votes.
It seems highly unlikely Trump doesn't get the nomination. But on the other hand, a former president who everyone is scared of in his own party should have done better than 51% among the 15% of the electorate hard cores in IA who showed up. Objecively it's really not a strong showing considering who he is and the iron grip he holds on the party.

.
Think about it this way:
Almost 54,000 of the Iowa party's most faithful braved windchills as low as -40 degrees in order to throw their vote against Donald Trump into a paper sack from HyVee (or sometimes, a Home Depot bucket). Am I foolish enough to imagine that all of those same 54,000 prefer Anyone But Trump Up to and Including Joe Biden? No. But some will. And if that's true for the most die-hard folks in Iowa, how true is it for the less than die-hard?

Can you imagine the heads that would explode if that happened?
When Wayne Owens (great guy) lost to Jake Garn and was then called to serve as mission president, a lot of people were confounded that such a prominent Democrat could be found worthy.

Because he lost. Winning proves worthiness.

Stating the obvious, but this primary is over. Haley has an outside shot at NH, but it won't matter. She doesn't have a prayer anywhere else. Trump is basically running as an incumbent, with all of the power and momentum that comes with that. Hell, most of his dumb MAGA base thinks he actually won the last election. Haley and DeSantis never had the guts to go after trump and thus never provided the base with any reason to go with them over trump. Not sure it would have worked either way. Sadly, I suspect the series of lawsuits and indictments were a godsend to trump because it allowed him to fan the flames of grievance, which is very powerful.
I think Biden will win, but I wish he (and Harris) would've had the guts to bow out and let someone younger and more dynamic make a run.
