  • So I upgraded to regular flex clubs. After 2 years of playing with Senior flex and getting my mind wrapped around the idea of slowing things down is better than hard and fast (a life lesson good for nearly every life situation).

I stayed with the Taylormade Burner driver. I loved it with a senior flex and so far have been playing it well. I thought of myself as a Ping guy and pretty much thought I was going to get a set a Pings. After hitting about 8 different set of clubs and working with the local pro I ended up with Nike SQ Machspeed irons.

I have yet to have a chance to play a full round with them, but so far I think just the change in flex has added about 10 yards per club.

I don't know how you played with senior flex dude. My driver and woods are all stiff and my irons are a uniflex.

        • To heck with positive thinking. Another stinkin 85. 3 doubles and 2 triples. Down $140 bucks. I think I will find me a nice lady, get married and aspire to become a Bishop.

Sorry '71, sounds like a rough day.

Thanks, I guess I shouldn't whine. I could be poor Bob Bennett today.

It's tough to witness yourself fading. Old age sucks. Yea, I am blaming it on my old age.

Even Tiger can't make putts when he isn't getting constant action. I think you need the lady for your game not your calling aspirations.

                • Husky after reading Golf Digest's article on golf balls, you'll probably want to stop playing those pink balls now that you have upgraded shafts.

From the pictures I've seen of him... (looking like a strong young man) I'd think the regulars might even be too soft for him, unless he has a swing speed of about 80.

My swing speed is in the mid-80s. I have been playing golf regularly for about 8-9 years now and I spent the first 2-3 swinging hard and trying to make the game match my impressions of my physical size. I always shot 135+, I remember vividly the day I shot 129 I felt like I had won a major, and finally decided to take some lessons.

The first thing the lessons did was tell me to slow everything down. Over the next few years I have developed a few mental tricks, pink balls among them, to keep things calm and slow on the course and I take about 3-5 strokes off my game a year. I am now around 100 every round and break it fairly often.

If I was still gripping and ripping I would have given the game up.

That's great HFN...do what you gotta do to enjoy the game. I admire that you can slow it down. I think I start every round telling myself it doesn't matter if I crush the ball if I'm not on the fairway and greens. But somewhere along the way, I start thinking I should be able to hit my 8 iron 165 instead of my usual 155, and yeah I usually hit my gap wedge 110-115, but my buddy just hit his SW that far so I should be able to do the same....ugggh. Start overswinging, contact gets awful, bad shots happen, confidence falls, and voila blow-up holes waiting to happen.

Part of enjoying golf for me has been working at accepting my ability and also accepting that I can't expect perfection when I'm playing just a couple times per month. I think if I could play 1-2 times/wk I really could get better, but that's just not going to happen right now--can't afford it. So if I'm going to spend the money to play, I better learn to enjoy each round and that means slowing down, enjoying the good shots and the company, and letting go of unrealistic expectations.

The problem is, I suck at doing all that.

So kudos to you. It's a game, after all.

I have a bid in on e-bay for some Mizuno mx 1000's. They are sweet. I have some M23's (I think or 45"s). I love Mizuno.
