Are you hitting graphite shafted irons yet? I had a set of Pings for years, but I slowly had trouble hitting my 9 iron 130-135. In colder weather I could barely hit it 120. I determined at the age of 50 the Pings swing weight was just too much anymore. So I did a ton of research of graphite iron shafts, and went with Grafalloy Prolaunch Blue, Stiff plus 1/2" put into TM R7's 4-SWOriginally posted by byu71 View PostLooked at some Mizuno MX1000 irons. I liked the feel. A bigger sweet spot than what I am currently hitting, but I am slowly facing facts. I am OLD.
I figured that the lower kick point of the ProLaunch Blues and 65 grams of shaft would produce a lighter longer combination that would be just the ticket to higher flight and softer landings. The first round with them was like taking Viagra, in the sense that I felt younger, could swing freer, and the yardage I gained was about 10/15 yards a club. The best part is that I can easy tempo my swing and still get the yardage I need, which leads to more repeatable performance.
The only negative I noticed during the first 5 rounds was that I consistently hit 5 yards right from my old alignment. After 5 rounds, I noticed I somehow corrected and my "good shots" were at the flag again. I don't hit right anymore.
So.... If your getting on in years, one game improvement tip is to go with graphite in your irons. Not a cheap graphite you cant' count on, but a professional grade shaft that won't bow on a downswing giving inconsistent results.
Side Bar: Art, I checked out the CG-7's at GolfSmith today, and am now officially jealous. I have a tip for you if you haven't bought a driver yet. The FT Tour 9.5 with the Aldilla VooDoo svs6 shaft. Not the FT-9, but the FT Tour. (only $399)

Yea I went to graphites about 10 years ago. A lot had to do with their being easier on the aches I would get in my arms and hands.Originally posted by clackamascoug View PostAre you hitting graphite shafted irons yet? Went to the driving range over the weekend and am starting to hit some of my irons better. I think I was able to nail down some of my yardage consistently. I need to stay in my swing better and just not try to mash it though. My fairway woods felt good.
I am playing tomorrow and the weather seems to be shaping up nicely. Mid 60's and rain today. Partly cloudy and mid-60's tomorrow. So hopefully that means I can hold some greens and putt aggressively. I think it's going to be a scramble though and I would much rather keep my own score. Not sure of the format, I just know I am paired with my dad in a foursome. Scrambles are fun though when you have someone that can consistently find the fairway. Then I can Happy Gilmore it."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

Are you just saying that or do you know that you're the worst on the team? What is the format?Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostI am playing on a men's league team with a couple guys from my ward, first night is tonight. I am both excited and nervous, nobody likes to be the worst player on a team."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

I just got back from the course shot a 85 which epitomizes my game. Front nine I shoot 39, I burned the edges of the cup on 3 different birdies, so could have shot lower. Back nine I was scrambling to make bogeys. I was terrible with my second shots and consistently so so with my putter, 2 putting every green until #18 where I 3 putted. Somedays I honestly wonder why I keep playing this stupid game.

I bet you score more than your partners thenOriginally posted by Art Vandelay View PostThat is possible... especially when you consider I wear leather chaps and a mask when playing

I'm sure you understand how many of us would love to 2 putt every green and shoot an 85.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostI just got back from the course shot a 85 which epitomizes my game. Great score for a Bishop! If your back nine was appreciably worse you just need to tone up for golf season. Lift a little weight, coupl'a situps. You're good to go.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostI just got back from the course shot a 85 which epitomizes my game. I picked up a Sumo at the end of last season. I'm in love with it. The sound isn't great, but none of the big new drivers sound much better.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostYeah the Sumo sounds like you are hitting rocks with a baseball bat. It is awful I have a friend that plays one and it leaves my ears ringing after every hole.
