Fortunately the last few years when I start doing this it hasn't led to the "righties" with my irons. It is dang frustrating though. They are like having bronchitis. It lies there dormant and then all of a sudden rears its ugly head.

I had this too and was fighting it the last time I played a round with FN Phat. Mine was the opposite. It started with my irons. I'd be set up 100 out and then I'd miss way short and 75 yards to the right of the green. It's enough to make you want to quit.

This is how I get the triple yesterday. Par 3, 170 yards. This hole plays shorter than the distance so I can get there with a 6 iron. I don't trust that though and so swing a little to hard and pull out of the swing earlier. The shot goes high, right of the green about 20 yards and 15 yards short. First chip goes right about 10 yards. Second chip goes right again and into the trap. I can't control myself and a loud F-me (actually just F-me, not the full version) is exclaimed. Out of the bunker and two putt. Just your routine 6 on a relatively easy par 3.

Sounds like you have been taking lessons from me.

Playing with one of those would be more embarrassing than a double bogey. Just stand farther away, and reach for the ball.

I don't know what you shoot, but if you could be a scratch golfer with gimmick clubs, would you still feel that way?

Isn't that the same mentality people had when the non-wood drivers started filtering into the market. That hasn't really worked out.

Those weren't that all that bad. Its these new 460cc drivers that are an abomination!

                  • I shot an 88 today at River Bend. I was fighting it a bit. The guy I was with put every drive 300 yards down the middle. But his chipping was atrocious. He would duff, blade, or shank every single chip. He started putting when he was 30 yards down the fairway. It was really hard to watch.

There's only one problem with that logic. Those gimmick clubs have been around for 50 years. I don't recall seeing them being used by a person with a single digit game.

The reason people shank is that they are standing too close to the ball, and it ricochets off the hosel. With the club we're speaking of, it's still possible to shank it if you stand too close.

You and I both know why people shank. In fact, many people who regularly shank know why they shank. But that doesn't mean there is a right or wrong way for someone to fix the problem.

Essentially you are saying "if a single-digit handicapper doesn't use it, it's no good." This is flawed for a couple of reasons. First, nobody (well, besides you) has limited this discussion to single-digit handicappers. The fact of the matter is, most golfers here are not single-digit handicappers, and if a gimmick club would help them improve their game significantly, they would have no problem using one. Second, you seemingly assume that everyone possesses the time, money, and physical talent to be a single-digit handicapper, and therefore shouldn't waste time using a gimmick club. Again, if a gimmick club helps someone maximize their golfing experience, I don't see anything wrong it. More power to them, I say.

I find your golf elitism, or rather, your perceived golf elitism, quite amusing, albeit annoying. Perhaps you should go back and read this thread from the beginning to get an idea as to who you're dealing with in the thread. Or you can continue to post patronizingly, and provide us with some chuckles in the process. In short, I don't doubt that you know a lot about golf. But I'm almost certain you don't know as much about golf as you think you do.

I was just remarking to your post (and a good point) about metal drivers. I never intended get into anyones grill and offend them about the stupid wedge. I'm sorry if I annoy you, I just love golf and try to share my 40 years of experience to those who care to listen.

In addition, I'm sure you're right about me not knowing as much about golf as I think I do, but on the other hand how would I know.

I refute any implication as to an elite mentality. I've been known to build my own clubs, (very uncool). I don't belong to a country club, but I admit to driving my Mercedes to the public course instead of my Infiniti. I'm barely a middle class golfer as far as status goes, and even though I live in Oregon, I've yet to play Bandon Dunes, because it would cost $300 per round with a caddy.

I refuse to apologize for being a single digit handicapper, and I will continue to report my rounds, and share my thoughts here, despite your amusement at my expense.

I have no problem with you being a single-digit handicapper, and I welcome your reports about your rounds and scores. I do think you could use a little more tact when posting about others golf games, though. Being good doesn't give you any right to patronize. Also, I never said anything about your financial elitism. Being a golf snob isn't always about being a wealth snob. Very cool that you drive a Mercedes and an Infiniti, though.

                              • Just got back from playing a course near my house. Shot an 87, which isn't too bad considering I've only played twice this year so far.
