  • Well... my big out of town plans got pushed back. And it's going to be 68* and sunny tomorrow, and Thursday.

Two days in a row again... I hope I can meet my expectations.

Hole 6 - 560 yard double dogleg par 5. It's named "Lone Fir" for the big monster blocking your second shot to the hole.

      47+41=88

Par-Par-Par - Hey! I'm on a roll.... 4th hole = quadruple bogey. A 7 on a par 3. Next hole I got a double. Next hole... Well... it doesn't matter. It was a beautiful day, and I had fun... (at least on the back 9).

Playing partner horror story of the day. Ron is a 5 handicap. He's 65, and has a beautiful swing. On the first hole he says to me... "I guess you've heard about me?" I said "nothing nefarious ..." He said. "I have a mental problem. I can't hit the ball until I run out of breath. It usually takes about 30 seconds per shot." By the third hole I'm ready to shoot myself... the guy is sooo slooow. At least he had a good attitude about it, and the other guys were making fun of it... to ease the tension. He was a good player, and very nice, but man... it got really old waiting for every him to run out of breath .... even on a 2 foot putt.

        41+40=81

Zero Birdies, 10 pars, 7 bogies, 1 double.

Nice round, but nothing really to get too excited about. I guess it's nice to see more pars than bogies, and only the one double. Missed about 5 very makeable putts today, which would have made pars birdies, or bogey's . Driving was very good today, with little to none fairway's missed. Had a couple of "chunks" on short yardage shots.... Was dipping down. Fixed it mid round.

Shot of the day. 175 5 iron into the long par five. Stuffed it to 3 feet. Missed birdie.

        • DT and I are playing in our Men's Club Championship for the first time. 2 day tournament we are in flight C with the 17+ handicap. Not proud of that but it is what it is.

We will return and report nightly. Should be great fun.

          • Yesterday's golf round was a lot of fun.

The young lady (24) who has given me two lessons and helped my game a great deal asked a couple of weeks ago if she could play with our group on occasion. This is akin to admitting women in Augusta.

She had taught 5 of our group and with my substantial influence in the group, we got a vote favorable to letting her play.

I told her Wednesday if she played with us Friday she could play in a group with myself, my sheet hanging partner and another guy she has taught. In addition I would pay her $100 to help me with my game while we played.

On the first tee my partner made a bold statement by telling her if she could get me in the 70's, he would give her half of his share of our winnings.

Off we went with 5 other groups. The other guys really loaded up on our "betting sheet". The thinking was my partner and I couldn't concentrate on golf.

She mainly made sure my alignment was right and I played pretty well for me on the front, 40. On the back I ran off 3 straight pars and then blew up with a double and a triple bogey. I birdied the next hole, a par 3. Still to get in the 70's, I had to have one more birdie and 17 is the toughest hole on the course. I rarely par it. Well I go par, par and then knock it on 18 with a 8 foot downhill curler for birdie. Sure I made the putt or I probably wouldn't be telling the story.

Wahoo, a 79. My instructor came out well. $100 teaching fee from me. $60
each team member on our team got and 50% of my partners half ended up being $240. She walked away with $400. Not bad and I walked away very happy even though I had gotten hammered in the market that day. Any day I shoot in the 70's, I couldn't care less how big a hit my net worth took.

That's a good round and a good story. You guys play for real money. Our whole pot is usually only around $400 with a $9 ante. You've yet to describe the young lady, but at our age, anybody under 40 is cute. Speaking of wealth and Nets... mine could use a safety net.

I will just say she looks good enough that you could lose your concentration if you let your mind wander. What gets the amount up is my buddy and I hanging a sheet. Our best ball against any other twosomes. We play a $5-10-5 nassau. When you have 20-32 guys there can be anywhere from a combination of 15-40 different bets. I keep track and over the years while you can go up big and down big, in the long run it basically ends up a break even.

44 front and 40 back today. I am happy to be playing better than a while ago when I couldn't break 90.

                • I did not do well in our men's club championship. I went 99/98 over the 2 days for a net 157. That was good enough for 3rd to last. Hole of the day was on hole 16 today. I was on in two, about 16 feet from the flag. I then proceeded to 5 putt from there. I put the first putt 10ft past the cup. My comeback putt was 3ft past. I then missed the next 2 from less than 3ft. It sucked.

One player in the group behind us carded a 13 on the same hole. So I don't feel too bad.

Sorry it didn't work out. I was looking forward to a good report. Something about hoisting a trophy, buying rounds, blacking out, and ending up in the drunk tank.

                    • Sorry for being so late...I was tired last night after golf and then going to a hockey game.

                      Day 1 Report

                      51+46=97

Did not play well at all. We play the Men's Club Championship from the Blue Tee's. DT and I normally play from the White Tee's.

Hole 1 Par 4 - Drive just left of the fairway. Hooked my 8 iron. Chipped from behind a tree. 3 putt. Not a good start. Take a 6.

Hole 2 Par 4 - Hooked my drive into the sand on the left. Chipped out short of the green. Chipped it past the hole. 2 putt. Take a 5.

Hole 3 Par 3 - 7 iron left of the green into the sand. Skulled my chip past the green, almost killed DT. Nice recovery chip. 2 putt. Take a 5.

Hole 4 Par 5 - Got rid of my hook! Nice slice into the fairway sand trap. Thought I would outsmart the game of golf and hit a 4 hybrid out of the trap. Playing partners tried talking me out of it. I am smarter than they are, so I don't listen to them. I proceed to smoke my 4 hybrid into the face of the trap. It launches itself into the air, travels 15 feet into the next fairway bunker. Having learned my lesson I hit my 8 iron and I am out. Another 8 iron short of the green. Poor chip. 2 putt. Take a 7.

Hole 5 Par 3 - There she is! Hook my 8 iron left of the green and down the cart path. Chip up and over a tree short. Another chip onto the green. 2 putt. Take a 5.

Thinking about selling my golf clubs.

Hole 6 Par 4 - Holy Crap. A fairway. This is pure luxury. I then proceed to hook my 4 hybrid left of the green. I then hit a nice chip to 10 feet. 2 putt. Take a 5.

Hole 7 Par 4 - Smoked my drive. Dead center down the fairway. I hit it farther than I normally do from the White Tee's.

Hey...nice drive...sorry about your next shot!

                      I chili dip my wedge. I chip on...barely, and have a solid 2 putt. Take a 5.

Hole 8 Par 4 - Here we go again...Hook my drive left. Punch out from behind the trees. Hook my 7 iron left of the green. Another terrible chip. A craptastic 3 putt for a 7. Here is the triple I promised myself I would avoid.

Hole 9 Par 5 - Crush my drive. I am in the fairway and only about 275 out. Decide to play smart and hit my 7 iron to give me a nice 9 iron to the green.

                      Or....

I hook my 7 iron left of the trees on this hole. I am lucky and end up in a good spot. So...I chunk my wedge. I chip on and two putt for a 6.

After 9 I am sitting at 51. Shot it terrible.

We are backed up pretty good at 10 and I started to take some practice swings. I realize that my hands are about a foot in front of my body at contact. This is causing my to close my club face at contact, and I am hooking my hands to get around. Something to consider.

Hole 10 Par 5 - Hit a good drive, but left of the green. Hit a really good 3 wood. Hit a good 8 iron just off of the green. Bump and run...2 putt. Bogey.

Hole 11 Par 4 - Hardest hole on the course. Blues add 75 yards to this hole. I yank my drive left but it rolls through a long dry fairway sandtrap.

Shot of the day...I am behind a tree. So I aim 30 yards right of the green and drop a hammer with my 6 iron. Perfect draw onto the green. 15 feet from the cup. DT thougt it was heading OB when I hit it. Crapped myself with the 3 putt, but I was feeling good. Bogey.

Hole 12 Par 4 - Hit my drive dead straight but right of the fairway. Hit a nice wedge up and over a tree. Chip onto the green. 2 putt. Bogey.

Hole 13 Par 3 - Playing over 200 yards. I hate that. Hit my 4 hybrid left of the green, but not in the trap. Poor chip. 2 putt. Bogey.

Hole 14 Par 4 - Pull out my driver and 2 hop it into the water. Drop 2, hit 3. Hit a PW and stuck the green. 2 putt for a bogey.

Hole 15 Par 3 - Pull my 7 iron left of the green. Chip up and 2 putt. Bogey

Hole 16 Par 4 - Drive is left of the fairway but not bad. Hit a great GW onto the green. Holy crap...a GIR. 2 putt. Par.

Starting to get a little confidence.

Hole 17 Par 4 - Absolutely destroy my drive. Rolls through the fairway into the long grass. Flier lie...hit my 8 iron past the green. Chip short of the green...chip on and 1 putt. Bogey

Hole 18 Par 5 - Hit my drive right of the fairway, and right of the fairway bunker. Hit a great 3W. This is a club I don't normally like. Drive up to my ball and what do I find....

Some bastard didn't replace his divot and I am sitting right in it. My ball is 2/3 underground now. I am gap wedge distance, but I am going to have to get into the ground. So I go with my SW and swing hard.

MUTHERF*****. I skull it right into the water. FIX YOUR DAMN DIVOTS FOLKS. REPLACE IT OR FILL IT. NOT THAT HARD.

                      I drop 4 and putt 5 onto the green. 2 putt. Posted a 7.

                      46

So I am not to happy with the round, but feel like I found something. I am ready for Round 2. And I am really excited to get home and watch the BYU game.

                      • Day two begins...

                        Stake Conference!

So we get to the Club House to take a look at the leader board. I am in 8th all by myself, and DT is in 9th. Only 10 people in the C flight folks. (That is 17+ Handicap)

I am 6 shots off of the lead. We order some breakfast and talk about the round. DT is more optimistic than I am, and he talks about playing it one hole at a time. I am not confident. We skip hitting the range today. Let's go hit about 6 practice putts and get on with it.

Our playing partner is in 10th. He is 72 years old and awesome. I hope to be out there like him in 44 years. On with my report.

Hole 1 Par 4 - Nice easy swing. Great drive. I am about 85 yards out.

Hey great drive...sorry about your next shot. NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND!

I hit a great SW. Land front of the green and miss the cup by 2" and leave myself with a 5'. Drop it. Birdie baby.

Hole 2 Par 4 - Nice easy swing. Fairway baby. Draw a 7 iron onto the left edge of the green. Hit a great putt, thought it was going in but just missed. 3' fast. Dropped it. Par.

Hole 3 Par 3 - Nice easy 7 iron. Short of the green. Chip past hole. 3 putt. Promised myself I wasn't having any of these. Double.

Hole 4 Par 5 - Another nice easy drive right down the middle. Decide to give my 3W a shot. Hook it...into a sand trap...and right out onto a hill. 6" more and it rolls into the water. Hit a good 7 iron left short of the green. Decent chip. 2 putt. Bogey.

                        Hole 5 Par 3 - Hit a 7 iron to 21". GIR baby. 2 putt. Par.

Hole 6 Par 4 - Swing too hard, and I am left of the fairway. Hit a great 3 Hybrid right of the green. Nice chip up. 2 putt.

                        Feeling really good.

Hole 7 Par 4 - Got lazy and hit a fade just short of the water. Hit a great 8 iron just short of the green. Nice chip to 5'. Great putt. Par.

Hole 8 Par 4 - Hook my drive left again. This hole has water down the entire right side. Just afraid of it I guess. I draw a nice 6 iron onto the green within 10 feet. Hit a good putt just short. Par.

Hole 9 Par 5 - I am feeling it and I let a thought get into my head...I can have my 2nd ever 30something round if I don't screw this hole up.

Hook my drive onto the edge of a trap. Punch an 8 into the fairway. Go easy on a 4 HY. Dumb. Top it and it rolls to a GW shot. Chunk that into a bunker. Nice out though onto the green. 2 putt. Double.

After 9 I am sitting at 41 and feeling good.

Head to the clubhouse for a refill. While in there the group behind me comes in and the 18 year old kid says "DT said you had a 41. I did also. Good luck on the next 9." He had that grin like I had not shot. He had a 3 stroke lead on my to start, and still does. (But I have a higher HCP than he does by 3 strokes so we are dead even. He just doesn't realize it yet.)

I get in the cart and DT says "Nick was excited to tell me about his 41. I told him you shot the same. He was shocked. You could see him deflate right away."

I am still not believing. There are 7 other golfers in my way.

Hole 10 Par 5 - Drive just left of the fairway. Great 3W. Nice 8 iron left of the green. Lazy chip. Next chip gets on and I two putt. Double

Hole 11 Par 4 - Hook my drive left again. Behind some trees, so I decide to play smart. I hit a 7 iron and leave myself 85 to the pin.

Shot of the day #2. I stick my SW to 2'. Hardest hole on the course and I par it.

Hole 12 Par 4 - Smoke my drive, just left of the fairway. Poor 9 iron. So so chip. 2 putt bogey.

Hole 13 Par 3 - Hit my 5 iron short of the green. Decent chip with a two putt. Bogey.

Hole 14 Par 4 - Hit a stinger just short of the green. Talk myself out of a PW and into a GW. STUPID. Trust yourself. I have to go hard with my GW and I hook it into the sand. Get out in one and I two putt. Bogey.

Hole 15 Par 3 - Hit what I think is a great 6 iron, only to find out that I am in the sand short of the green. Get out in one...barely. I am a terrible sand player. Almost drop the chip but it runs past. 2 putt double.

Hole 16 Par 4 - Hit my drive great. I am in the fairway and am 100 out. And this is where it gets funny.

There is a house on the hole having a party in their back yard. There are a bunch of kids and some Tejano music blaring. I settle in over my shot and as I am preparing to swing DT says under his breath "Hey...keep it down over there!" I start to chuckle in my back swing and I top it. DT feels much shame and apologizes. I am fine with it. I get up and hit a terrible SW into the sand. I get out in one and I two putt. Double.

                        Back to back. Sheesh.

Hole 17 Par 4 - Hit a great drive in the fairway. Hook my 8 iron left of the green. Worst iron shot of the day. Rewarded with a terrible bounce. I am pissed. So I hit a poor chip. I chip again and put it on. 2 putt. Double.

Back to back to back. Sheesh.

Hole 18 Par 5 - Snap hook my drive left. Hit a provisional...snap hook that one left. We go up and my provisional is gone. OB and can't find it. DT is able to find my first ball, but I have a bush 1' into my back swing. So I grab my 5 iron and samurai chop right down on top of it and it goes 20 feet.

I hit my 5 iron again and I smoke it. I am 115 out. I know I should hit my PW, but I talk myself into a GW. Chunk it and I barely clear the water. I am in the sand. I hit a SW to 5'. I AM A GREAT SAND PLAYER! Drop a great putt for a bogey.

                        47.

So I go 41+48 for a 88. I am bothered because I just pissed away a chance to win some money.

For this tournament I am a 21 Handicap.

So I Net a 76 on day one, and a 67! on day two for a 143. Still upset.

Out of the 10 golfers our flight, we are the first in the clubhouse. I give the Men's Club President my card and he is shocked yet excited for me. Our playing partner buys DT and I a drink (Diet Dr. Pepper) for having such a great time with us today.

Our cards are posted and I am in the lead. Not a surprise, because we are the first group in.

We wait...the next group comes in hanging their heads. All we hear is "I played terrible...I played like shit...today sucked."

                        Scores are tallied and posted.

4 golfers are left...and I am still in the lead.

Last group makes there way in, and I am starting to get nervous. Scores are tallied....

                        AND THE WINNER IS...

Oh wait. MC President has to go out and play 18 again to break a tie in Flight A that he was in. So we sit and wait for 15 minutes not knowing.

He finally comes back, his challenger conceded the hole and the MC President wins Flight A.

                        Cards are examined and posted.

HOLY SHIZ.....I did it. I came from 6 shots back, to win by 6. It was a Tigeresque moment, minus the hookers and blow.

I won $200 script from the Pro Shop. I won admiration. I am the Flight C champ for 2012. I get to reign for a year!

It was a great day. DT started building me up mentally when he realized I was having a good round. He kept telling me "You are playing great, the other folks aren't going to be able to keep up. You can only play your shots and trust that they can't keep up." He was right and I owe him a big thanks for the help.

MC President asked me if I was available on Saturdays in January and February as our club is going to be playing a Men's Club Tournament versus another course, and he would like me to be a part of the team.

                        Today was a good day.

                        • I made sure to make good mental notes. I wanted to be detailed. I find great joy in reading Clack and 71 talking about their rounds, and I wanted to make a contribution to the thread.

Sorry for being so wordy, but I felt like I owed it to the group.

                              • Good Job Tick... You're a winner - and a good round narrator. I'm glad you kicked Nick's punk ass. We've got Nicks's at our club too. Is the $200 good for food, or just the pro shop. I plowed my summer winnings into the restaurant, and ate with pride.

If not... you ought to take the $200 and buy a belly putter. 5 putts... that's not only a crime, it's a cry for intervention.
