  • Played 27 holes today. The first 18 was with a group of guys from work. I shot an 87 (43/44). The last nine was a night golf tournament. My group shot even par for a net 30 (Peoria scoring) which was good enough for second place. The winning gross score was a 33, but their net was 37. The first place team shot a 37 and their net ended up being 29.7...Isn't Peoria scoring great.

    • A tale of two 9s for me today. 62 on the front, the worst number I've put down in at least 2 years. The awful thing was I had 2 pars in there. The other 7 were an adventure. I went into the back 9 with very low expectations, I shot a 43. I can't tell right now if I hate golf or love it.

      I'll find out more tomorrow.

C'mon, you had at least three 9s. Admit it.

I had 4, although one of them also doubled as a 10.

You are a better, and more honest man than I am. I can't keep hitting the ball after 8. I lose all focus, and just start hitting it with one hand, or putting with the wrong club. Though I did card an 11, in a tournament earlier this year (3 balls OB on same hole); sad part was, I was only +2 for the rest of the side.

Hey... take the club more inside and pretend its a tennis racquet. If you're taking it outside, you'll just cut across the ball and spin it like a Frisbee. It's all about the swing path and hand position.

              • My kid laughs at me because I always come home after golf and tell him I've got it figured out now. Most fade quickly but I think this has some legs to it. Yesterday I went out and was hitting it fair but was still a little inconsistant. I love the way Justin Rose swings a club so I decided to shorten mine up to about a 3/4 swing and I started hitting it real pure. We are taking some customers golfing tomorrow so I'm excited to try it over 18 holes.

If you want to hit it short and straight, just hit a 8 iron off the tee. You'll be putting for par every hole, and scoring better than ever.

In fact, I would bet that anyone of us, regardless of skill level would shoot less than 90 if we only hit 5 irons and less for a whole round. In fact, I think I'll give it a try soon, and report back.

My friend Husky - living the life. (Brasada)

I'm going to play in a Best Ball game tomorrow. I hope it's not windy like today was.

Hey Husky, did you see I flipped on my clubs, and went game improvement with the G20's?

                      • 48-46 on a beautiful high desert day. I drove the ball better than I have in a couple months, including driving the green on a short par 4. Of course it was a 3 putt par,

I had 6, 3 putt bogeys today, only 2 triples and nothing worse. I gave myself a chance, just couldn't finish on so many holes. I'll try harder tomorrow.

                        • Golf Report: Thursday October 4, 2012

                          43+44=87

Zero Birdies, 6 pars, 9 bogies, 3 doubles.

As this is a new month, my recent awfulness has caught up to me, and I'm now a 12 handicapper. That means I average only 6 pars a round. That means I get 2 bogies for every par. That means I'm going backwards, and not forward. I can tell that age is catching up with me.

The weird thing is that I really had fun today. We played a 2 man best ball, and we were in it till the end, and only lost by a shot. We would have won if I would have made those birdies. Yes, I had 5 birdie putts less than 15 feet, 3 less than 6 feet, and didn't make a one.

My new irons are unbelievable. I didn't hit one bad iron shot all day. the biggest problem was the wind. For the last two days Portland is getting an East Wind out of the Gorge, and its a 20mph steady with gusts to 30mph. Several trees fell on the course in the last two days, and golf balls are falling out of trees like confetti. It was like a two club differential into the wind, and the side winds were sending you another fairway over.

Shot of the day: I had a handful of really good iron shots, ones that held the pin really well, (exactly like I've been looking for) but the 6 iron on 9 to four feet was the best. It was a low burner out of the wind, landing 20 feet shy and rolling up 4 feet to the right pin high. Well, I 3 putted, but the shot was great anyway.

                          • 40+39=79

Yesterday's round was bittersweet. I'm very happy to break 80, but that is tempered by the fact that this course was pretty dang easy by Vegas standards. Only 6300 yards, so I was hitting lots of 8, 9, and PW into greens, and even the occasional sand wedge.

My irons, wedges, and putter were all solid--only a single 3-putt on the day, and that came from 60 feet away on a severely undulating green. I chipped in twice on the day, which was amazing. On the first chip in, I came up short on a par three. I played the chip perfectly, reading the right-to-left slope of the green and pinching the chip with a downward strike. It landed short and right, but with backspin. When it bit, it pulled left down the slope and trickled into the right edge of the cup. It was beautiful.

The second was on the 18th. I missed the fairway and found a fairway bunker (a common theme on the day) forcing me to lay up short of the water in front of the green. My third came up short, leaving me with a fairly nasty lie in the rough. I opened up the face on my 60 and struck down pretty firmly, popping the ball up. It rammed into the pin and dropped into the cup to save par and break 80. Not nearly as pretty as the first chip in, but just as effective.

Putting was also great, as I dropped in several 10-12 footers, and just missed on 3-4 others.

My frustration with the round comes from my driving. Lots of looping banana slices in the 220-230 range, and a handful of fairway bunkers and chip outs to show for it. 3-4 years ago I was consistently hitting the ball 260-270 with sort of a power fade flight. That has disappeared, and been replaced with mega slices over the last year. It's driving me nuts. If I could have hit the ball 250 and in the fairway yesterday, I would have had a legitimate shot at even par. As it was, I didn't reach a single par 5 in two, despite the fact that none of them were longer than 500.

I have a top of the line driver, and 10-year old knockoff irons. Yet I can't hit my driver and I stripe my irons. I keep wanting to buy new irons, but I'm not sure I can justify that until I have a driver I can keep in play. The silver lining is that twice yesterday I found my old drive. One of them went nearly 300, even though it missed the fairway by 10 yards. I hadn't hit that shot in my last 10 rounds. So it's in there. I just need to figure out how to get it out more frequently.

                              • Threw down a 87 on Friday and a 84 on Saturday. I am really happy to be consistently shooting in the 80's. What I went through this summer was awful.

However, I am now wanting to throw down in the 70's again. I hit enough good shots to know I can, but am inconsistent. Going for another lesson on Tuesday. Found out my instructor was on the BYU women's golf team. She is really a good instructor and several of my friends games have improved after getting a lesson from her.
