Wait what happened to it being revelation and the policy being necessary to protect the children? Are we not protecting the children now? It would be nice if this change was accompanied by an acknowledgment, "yeah we screwed up before, sorry about that."

Also, what a load of bullshit the desnews only being willing to say that the policy was "perceived as painful among some supporters of the LBGT community."

This is as a change in the right direction, but also it highlights that the explanations for the policy in the first place were bullshit.

So, any bright ideas on what the impetus was for the reversal? Was this a groundswell of member outcry against the original policy? I'm biased and heard mostly negative opinions, but I didn't think a majority of members felt the same. Could this have actually been a grassroots thing?

FTR, like GM I came as close as I ever did to resigning because of the policy. It was a clear instance of pointless heartache and going against current doctrine. But then I got lazy and a week after the anger subsided.

Of course it is good news. Any reversal of hateful and discriminatory policy, regardless of the reason for it being done or the lack of the acknowledgment of the mistake, is good news.

For members who see inspiration in SLC being similar to what a SS president gets when calling a counselor I can't see this being a big deal, just a correction of a bad policy, but for members who believe there is a direct line from SLC to heaven they've got to be wondering what in the hell is going on, why would God keep changing his mind.

My instinct is the Church underestimated the number of folks whose lifestyle choices led Church leaders to believe the folks were opposed to the LDS Church yet desired their kids to be involved.

By the way, put me in the 'an official apology, or barring that, a stated reason why the policy was rescinded so soon after it was implemented' is a needful exercise. If this is going to be the legacy of RMN like JL said, and a hopeful direction going forward (i.e. wrong policies/doctrines are not allowed to fester), then the church should clear the air now. Not a few people (some here also IIRC) defended the policy solely because he said it was revelation. A simple clear apology like 'we erred in the policy, and also erred in expecting our local leaders to implement it' would go a long way. And I really think it would temper the bigger existential issue of why it was clearly thought of revelation, from the top down. That's still an issue for people like me. But a clear apology (more than just implied) would be much appreciated by hurt people still in the church, no?

My mom is as TBM as they come. She views almost everything the prophet says as direction from god. Yet she struggled a LOT with the policy. Thought it was at best bad PR and at worst unnecessarily painful and unchristian. She spent a lot of time sincerely praying on how to process it.

I have texted with her quite a bit this morning. She is overjoyed. She sees this as an answer to prayers (not just hers) and has no issue with the reversal.

I think nearly all members of differing levels of belief welcome the news without any of the complications or dissonance being suggested in this thread. This is good news everyone. The "yeah but"s are really weird to me.
