"Hold my root beer" - the Russell M. Nelson thread

it is ridiculously hard on the buildings. Previous to this year, our stake center was used for seminary for the local public high school and the nearby charter school. The charter school has grown so much that it takes most of the stake center now. So starting in September, the public high school seminary began meeting in our building. It has been less than a full school year, and the building is seriously always trashed.

On a related note, I am not a big fan of the members cleaning the buildings. Ever since that change was made, the buildings have been noticeably dirtier than back when there was a paid janitor. The combination of members cleaning the buildings and using these buildings for seminary is really bad. So If we get to stop paying seminary teachers in Utah Idaho and Arizona, I propose using some of that money to hire professional companies to clean the buildings.

You're right, of course. For me, I would rather have wine available than some of the dishwater swill that Funk gets so excited about.

Let me tell you what my alcohol sherpa told me many years ago, which has stood the test of time. Good beer tastes good from the very first swig. Good wine, on the other hand, takes a couple of swallows before you start to like it.

Ditto to you and creekster. I have zero desire for beer or wine. I used to drink tea as a kid before I was taught about the WofW. I don't need hot tea, but I love iced tea. Wine would appeal to me though.

Logistically here in Utah, I see no way to have the space or instructors for everything to be run early morning.

How is Utah any different than other non-Utah areas where there are three wards in each building which also hosts early morning seminary taught by "volunteers"? From my personal observation, number of youths in my area are similar to Utah and the logistics and space are made to work. I had similar thoughts as Soccermom, doing away with release time seminary and everyone gets to receive the "blessings" of early morning seminary.

Actually, I like Utah and have never felt scorned - I had the choice of starting my career in Utah but opted to leave the state after graduation for what seemed to be a better opportunity. And am not cheering for early morning seminary to happen church wide - just making a prediction. I'm more in favor of on-line seminary. Like Soccermom, I didn't force my kids to attend EMS; some graduated from seminary and got accepted to BYU, some did not have an interest in attending BYU and quit attending EMS or could not attend due to sports practice commitments. With seminary graduation being important on a BYU application, I think the hurdle is lower for Utah students with time release seminary. But then again, Utah kids have have a higher bar than other regions of the country so perhaps it evens out.

Not sure what you mean here. Are there are any high schools outside of Utah with around 1000 kids attending seminary?

While most buildings don't have more than 3 wards meeting in them, not all wards are created equal. Our ward has about 50 seminary age kids and our stake several hundred. We would definitely need to use other buildings besides the stake center (probably both other ones). Not sure what the deaf branch and porteguese branch in our stake would do. Some of those members live a long ways away. Then again, I'm not sure what they do now.

For the record, I do have a child in early morning seminary. Against my wishes my daughter gets up early because her friends are in the class. Going to the stake center would be way closer than dropping her off at the seminary building.

I didn't grow up in the Utah/ID/AZ coridor, but my high school in Canada has a seminary building with release time classes. My high school schedule only allowed me to do a semester or 2 of release time.

If they're studying the same material on Sunday, in their family study, and in Seminary, what exactly is the point of going to seminary? Seems like a cultural thing we should ditch, especially given the push to reduce the burden on the members.

My daughter will not get to study the old testament as part of seminary, but will have to do the D&C twice. That sucks. Getting rid of EMS should have been a part of this.

Am I the only one that doesn't care about alcohol? Even if the church all the sudden allowed it, I don't think I would change any of my drinking habits. Beer/wine/spirits hold no real appeal to me.
