Is there a point to ward conference?

To instruct, support, and minister to the ward leaders and members. I had this discussion in a formal meeting recently, so I knew the answer. My questions are a) do the ward leaders and members need that b) is ward conference an effective way to provide that; and c) is that how ward conference is received by the ward leaders and members? I submit to you that the answers to those questions are, for the vast majority of ward leaders and members, are :
        a) yes
        b) no
        c) no

Ward conference is when we caucus for who we want as leaders of the Church, both locally and worldwide.

President DOM said there were 4 purposes: “First, to transact current Church business, Second, to hear reports and general Church statistics, Third, to ‘approve of those names which I (the Lord) have appointed, or to disapprove of them’, Fourth, to worship the Lord in sincerity and reverence, and to give and to receive encouragement, exhortation, and instruction."

                • Remember the "Small temple" project that GBH spearheaded? Ha ha, just kidding, we're going to start ripping them down and building bigger temples in their place. Anchorage, Alaska is first on the chopping block.

It seems we cut some corners trying to get as many of these up as we could, and now it is coming back to haunt us.

Other theory is that this boom in temple building is fueled in part by prefab construction methods.

I, for one, think the more important factor is an executive decision to spend available resources on expanding temple access. Those two ideas are not inherently contradictory, of course.

Irrespective of a need for a larger temple, I've always been curious about whatever decision was made to nix Hinkley's small temple project. It was roaring when we were in Montreal in the late 1990's (and we got one), but by the time we moved to Boston in 2001 they were building a larger one there. I'm not sure if the Boston temple had alread been planned as a larger one before GBH anounced the small temple plans, but I don't recall small temples after that.

The small temple revelation or whatever you want to call it didn't last more than 10 years right?

I think the small temples were meant to form the network; the goal was to make sure a certain percentage of the Church's membership was within a certain distance from the temple, and so you plopped down these smaller buildings to plug the gaps in coverage even though you knew they would not see much use. Once the church got over that threshold, it resumed building temples designed to handle higher traffic volumes.

I also think we immediately found it was more useful to have slightly bigger temples. Anchorage is a prime example. Reportedly, on the day of the dedication, President Hinckley remarked that you could do twice as much work if you had another endowment room. Thereafter, most small temples were built with two rooms, and the Anchorage temple was resized as well.

                          • Anchorage temple was packed when we were there in 05-07. We tried to go once a month, which from Fairbanks was a bit of a haul. I always thought it was funny with the stake center being bigger than the temple. The Moroni on it is my favorite rendition, holding a scroll in his left hand. Some fond memories and experiences there.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
