Great another incorrect thread title. Does this mean that only 50% as many people will mass resign, or will the same amount now just be 50% as interested in Mormonism?

It means the church endorses Mormon Stories
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Not so fast with the jig dance... It seems that they have only agreed to a 'ceasefire'.

A quick update - My stake president has agreed to meet with me on June 29th, expressing a desire for de-escalation. The June 18th timeline has been suspended.

Like other ceasefire agreements this could all ramp up again once one side has a new game plan.

          • I am flattered that SU missed me. I love you too, man.

I haven't followed JD for quite a while so I have no idea what he did that would cause this. In any case, sounds like they are backing down on that front, so that is good. I suppose Kate Kelly knew (or should have known) all along that such a public stance carried some risk. But this is a dumb and short-sighted move. As I have said many times I think excommunication should only be used for the most extreme cases. A mature and confident faith doesn't silence members who ask questions like this. If we want people to stop calling us a cult, we should stop acting like a cult.

What if Katy Kelly published a GOT spoiler in church and ruined it for her bishop?

While he uses some pretty derogatory terms such as "nominal members" he does make some (not many) good points. Clearly the church is trying to set boundaries, whether the "nominal" members like it or not. This paragraph is a gem:

Protecting the innocent and unwary members? Sounds like squashing real history in favor of correlated history.

He also sheds some light on why Dehlin is being called in:

While I respect Dehlin, I think the guy is definitely weird....and maybe mentally unstable. His actions are all over the place.

At the end of the day, this whole thing reaffirms the fact that Mormonism is nothing like Judaism in terms of culture. Mormonism doesn't want a cultural brand of Mormonism, it wants only Orthodox Mormons. You are fine to stay on the rolls and not attend, but do so quietly.
I’ve seen a great deal of overt hostility and contempt expressed online, by at least nominal members of the Church, toward Kate Kelly’s (and perhaps also John Dehlin’s) bishop and stake leaders, and I’ve wondered where the compassion for them is.

They didn’t choose to be placed in their positions, and they certainly didn’t volunteer to be involved in these painful and now nationally publicized situations. They’re just ordinary members of our common church, assigned to attend to their responsibilities as best they can. They’re not members of some foreign caste or professional elite, and they don’t deserve to be condemned, ridiculed, pilloried, and damned by ostensible fellow-Saints — let alone to be thus damned, ridiculed, pilloried, and condemned on the basis of one-sided reports, hostile rumors, and innuendo.

So on one hand the church (in the official statement) is saying that the local leaders are all pushing this but Dan Peterson is saying that the local leaders did not choose to be part of this situation. It seems to me that Kate Kelly's bishop could have easily choose not to be involved by simply moving her records.

That is weird but one thing is clear, Daniel Peterson seems like a not nice guy. The mentally unstable remark is quite the cheap shot.

                      • If I'm Dehlin, I ask what's wrong with having the de escalation meeting on the original date? It's clearly an effort to wait out the media attention.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

                            lol.
you're right..except for Good Morning America, the New York Times, the Daily Beast, and all the local TV stations, this has been pretty much ignored.
God probably just changed his mind.

The thing that shocked me the most was the KUTV news story on the Strenthening the Members Committee.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

seriously. I wonder what Holland thought of being caught in a bald-faced lie. and I'm not even talking about the silly "this is all local leaders" toss under the bus.
