T-Mo out of material? He has told this story before. And I believe at conference, even.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I care, and I agree. But I doubt anyone cares about that either.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostNot that anyone cares, but I like Conference it makes me want to be a better person. GBH was checked out by the FBI... He turned up squeaky clean:Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostI hope you are right. GBH, in hindsight, was one of the most horrible people I've ever looked up to, and I hate him more than any of the traditionally vilified church leaders (JFieldingS, HBL, ETB, BRM, etc.). I realize that is a strong statement and that others will disagree with me strongly, but in my opinion he was a lying shyster con man with a glib tongue and media awareness.

FBI agents investigated President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1951, long before he became church president. Apparently the government wanted to see if he was a spy, and the answer was no.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the FBI did a background check in case President Hinckley received a job with Voice of America, a radio network run by the State Department.
The FBI file, which was released last week, shows investigators found out he had above-average grades at the University of Utah, and former supervisors and friends called him a hard worker and loyal American. There are no disparaging remarks in the file.
The bureau also looked for an arrest record, but did not find one. It's not clear whether Pres. Hinckley was offered the job."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
"I honestly believe saying someone is a smart lawyer is damning with faint praise. The smartest people become engineers and scientists." -SU.
"Yet I still see wisdom in that which Uncle Ted posts." -creek.

Elder Holland's address brought tears to my eyes. The idea that my wife will have the opportunity to stand alongside our resurrected daughter, and tell her that she loved her and devoted her life to her betterment makes me humble and grateful for both of them. Never have two people been more devoted to the other, and showed more love to each other as these two. All without speaking conversationally to each other.
Tonight she's watching "My Fair Lady" for the thousandth time, and keeps replaying the song "With a Little bit o' Luck."

In my dream, he said he HATED President Hinckley, which is even worse than what you dreamt. Then, when called out for it ... he made up some story about having inside information that he wasn't willing to share with us (probably out of respect for that horrible person that he hates).Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostI sometimes fall asleep during GC. I had a bad dream, that someone really smart called President Hinckley one of the most horrible people he once admired. That makes me sad in so many levels.

I'll respond and say that I kind of understand these feelings. Mine aren't nearly as strong and I still love GBH, but as time goes on he becomes less of a prophet and more of a politician in my eyes. He had a silver tongue and one that drew me in at a young age. I'd marvel at the way he'd spin things pertaining to our doctrine and our past and make them seem almost normal to other believers. Now I realize what he was doing, which isn't bad, but I don't find it totally honest.Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostI hope you are right. TSM, on the other hand, has made real and good changes and has always emphasized (at least in my memory) the sort of personal service that I think Christianity is - or at least should be - about. May he live a long time.
In all, I think GBH did more for Mormonism than most other prophets, but the more he did was to normalize it and expand it rather than doing more for Mormons themselves. He did do some great things though, including the PEF and the expansion of temples, and his wife Marjorie is likely the nicest person to ever walk the earth, but he now comes off to me as a very hard liner. But like in most cases, it's probably not him, it's me."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. I remember getting a text from a friend announcing his passing. I immediately jumped online to verify the news and was deeply saddened to see that his death had been confirmed. I recall telling Gidget and getting choked up. I miss him too.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI attended GBH's funeral and wept.
