"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
"I honestly believe saying someone is a smart lawyer is damning with faint praise. The smartest people become engineers and scientists." -SU. "Yet I still see wisdom in that which Uncle Ted posts." -creek. GIVE 'EM HELL, BRIGHAM!
I'll respond and say that I kind of understand these feelings. Mine aren't nearly as strong and I still love GBH, but as time goes on he becomes less of a prophet and more of a politician in my eyes. He had a silver tongue and one that drew me in at a young age. I'd marvel at the way he'd spin things pertaining to our doctrine and our past and make them seem almost normal to other believers. Now I realize what he was doing, which isn't bad, but I don't find it totally honest.
In all, I think GBH did more for Mormonism than most other prophets, but the more he did was to normalize it and expand it rather than doing more for Mormons themselves. He did do some great things though, including the PEF and the expansion of temples, and his wife Marjorie is likely the nicest person to ever walk the earth, but he now comes off to me as a very hard liner. But like in most cases, it's probably not him, it's me.
In other words, you still love GBH but you understand feeling like he is a lying shyster con man.
Both of you are whack out of your minds for different reasons. Nik for believing what he is saying and you for defending it but not believing it. At least you'll have the respect of mormon story crowd.
Niku, was it Mark Hoffman? I've always wondered how he got such a pass on that one. Other than that, I have a hard time finding anything not to at least respect.

I don't think this post is fair given what I wrote.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
T-Mo out of material? He has told this story before. And I believe at conference, even.
He's been repeating conference talk stories for years.
"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

There are some reports that Hinckley lied to the FBI about knowing Hofmann. Apparently the church just wanted to drop that whole matter as quickly as possible. Of course, Oaks was involved with that one as much or more than Hinckley. So Oaks must be a lying shyster con man as well.

I didn't know the fbi allegation, but his conduct elsewhere was pretty questionable, at least from my limited perspective. I'm not judging him--I've just always wondered why it's not mentioned more in anti Mormon circles.

I thought it was spot on. Nik called President Hinckley a lying shyster con man and you said President Hinckley is less a prophet and more a silver tongued politician who is dishonest about our doctrine, past and practices. But at least you still love him because his wife was nice, he built temples and established the PEF.
A co-workers 14 year old daughter tried to commit suicide a few months back. She was admitted to the University of Utah psychiatric hospital. She spent two weeks in this hospital with girls similar to her. The hospital was crowded and she had three different roommates throughout her stay, all with various psychiatric issues from self mutilation to intentional drug overdoses and numerous suicide attempts.
After two weeks in the hospital and receiving treatment she was released. This girl clearly had issues but they were ones that the family felt like they could solve and help her work through. Compared to the other girls at the hospital she at least had a chance.
After coming home and going through the honeymoon stage of everything being great. She had her first fight with her stepdad. She took a knife and carved "fuck you" in to her forearm. A behavior she had never done before that they later found out she learned from her roommates at the hospital.
It has been 6 months and she now sneaks out of the house and meets up with these other patients. She has started doing drugs and the self harm has only gotten worse. None of these things would have been a problem had she not gone to the hospital and worked through her issues at home.
That is exactly what this board had become. Minor issues with faith, lack of belief, and church doctrine become magnified when you get around other "patients". You are not helping one another you are driving each other further and further away and teaching new behaviors that you would have never known otherwise. The sick are treating the sick.
Seeing guys like Nik and ER jump on apostles is disheartening but almost expected. Now however,Moliere who had a few doubts has joined in and seems to be falling further away than he was before.
It is very sad to watch the self destruction and like my co-worker I feel even worse for your families as you continue to feed each other and pickup negative behaviors from fellow posters.

You are going to get some strong reactions to this, I suspect, and you aren't entirely right. But you probably aren't entirely wrong, either. In fact, you are probably more right than we would like to admit.
