I attended GBH's funeral and wept. He may have been a hardliner earlier in life, but I thought he was great prophet. I miss him."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

When you get a moment to calmly explain what causes you to have this opinion of GBH, I'd be interested in hearing it. Wait on it a week or so, it seems like you're kind of worked up about this right now, and I can't figure out why that is.Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostI hope you are right. GBH, in hindsight, was one of the most horrible people I've ever looked up to, and I hate him more than any of the traditionally vilified church leaders (JFieldingS, HBL, ETB, BRM, etc.). I realize that is a strong statement and that others will disagree with me strongly, but in my opinion he was a lying shyster con man with a glib tongue and media awareness.
TSM, on the other hand, has made real and good changes and has always emphasized (at least in my memory) the sort of personal service that I think Christianity is - or at least should be - about. May he live a long time.
ps- I do hope that your reasoning extends well beyond the opportunistic Mike Wallace interviews where he essentially swept the beautiful doctrine of deification under the rug.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

I second this request. Seems like a lot of it is stuff you don't want to share, but I'd like to hear as much of the reasoning as you're willing to divulge.Originally posted by pellegrino View PostWhen you get a moment to calmly explain what causes you to have this opinion of GBH, I'd be interested in hearing it. Agreed. I have probably said this before, but conference is one of the things that keeps me going. Every 6 months we hear the gospel "from the horses mouth" without (mostly) the church culture baggage.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostNot that anyone cares, but I like Conference it makes me want to be a better person. Especially, talks like Elder Hollands, and President Uchtdorf's.

Monson and Hinkley have worked closely for what, 20+ years? They've been unified for all the last major issues in the church during this time. I really can't see how there would be any appreciable difference in leadership direction. Sure, Monson empasizes different things than Hinkley did. But I just don't see the landmark change in church direction others have pointed to."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

Wifi has been turned off in the building"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I'm actually not worked up at all (the language was intentionally harsh to emphasize the difference between my views on the two men, which was probably a mistake in hindsight). You all may not believe that, but I'm not. My response to AA wasn't supposed to mean, but was meant to lament the fact that I am sad I have the opinion just as he's sad I expressed it. This is an opinion I've had for a long time and I dealt with the anger long ago. (It has almost nothing to do with Mike Wallace).Originally posted by pellegrino View PostWhen you get a moment to calmly explain what causes you to have this opinion of GBH, I'd be interested in hearing it. Again, a lot of the opinion is probably a self-projecting of who I was years ago, when I was much more angry. I'll think about explaining more fully. I will say that I think that he was responding to threats to the church as he saw them, as I think the current leadership is and as I think the past leadership was too. And as Dieter F. said, they may have made mistakes. Maybe the biggest difference is that it's one thing to read about some of the historical obfuscation given by people in defense of the church (think post-manifesto polygamy as an example) and another thing to be alive and listening to it.
The real point is that I think the church is moving in a good direction with good people for the most part. That's supposed to be a happy thought!Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.
