I hope you are right. GBH, in hindsight, was one of the most horrible people I've ever looked up to, and I hate him more than any of the traditionally vilified church leaders (JFieldingS, HBL, ETB, BRM, etc.). I realize that is a strong statement and that others will disagree with me strongly, but in my opinion he was a lying shyster con man with a glib tongue and media awareness.Originally posted by Moliere View PostIt's as apparent as ever what TSM is doing. Lowering the age of females to serve missions. Allowing gays to be active/participating members of the church while being open about being gay. The church not taking a stance on the BSA vote on membership. Adding "Care for the poor" as a quasi-fourth mission of the church. Leaving a legacy of talks about caring for the elderly and helpless. Calling DFU into the 1st presidency and thus giving him more influence and time to talk. Allowing Marlin Jensen to apoogize for the church's role in Prop 8.
GBH was great, but he was a hardlining pharisee at times. He also left the Prop 8 stuff (TSM is at fault for some of that) as well as the CCC mall to TSM to finish up as projects. TSM is obvious behind those things, but we was essential left them in a way and that's a tough hand to be dealt.
I think TSM has firmly put himself into my trifecta of favorite prophets along with DOM and JS.
TSM, on the other hand, has made real and good changes and has always emphasized (at least in my memory) the sort of personal service that I think Christianity is - or at least should be - about. May he live a long time.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Comparison of various statements he's made with the things he actually knew or said in other situations (some of which is information I have gained privately and am not willing to share) that indicate extreme duplicity. Part of it is also no doubt self-projection of my own hatred of the person and church member I was at that time and the esteem I held him in at the time as well. It's not that I think he was an evil person; it's just that I think he valued the PR aspect of the church above all else, including honesty.Originally posted by woot View PostWhat's your basis for it? I don't have any strong feelings toward GBH specifically, but I also haven't thought about it.
Again, my opinion, and I said I didn't think that would be a popular or welcome. I don't share it with very many people, but it's relevant to my exact opposite feeling about TSM, who I quite like. The very thing that makes it such a controversial opinion is the reason I have it - he was so beloved, including by me.
I just got done listening to the DFU talk, which was spectacular.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

It's my opinion. I don't expect you to share it, understand it or agree with it. I'm not stating it as fact - it's inherently subjective anyway - but this is an opinion I've had for a few years now.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostOh brother.
Also, is this my first ever "Oh brother"? If not, it's been a while.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.
