Pay what want. No one is begrudging your choice. If you read the scriptures specifically d&c 119 it says to be tithed on your surplus. Additionally the modern day interpretation of interest = income is nice. Income does not = gross revenues it = surplus

I do not begrudge you your choices based upon your discernment as it relates to the law of tithing. We are both ultimately answerable to God on this matter. Our respective judgments will be an independent inquiry. I do not pretend to wonder how you and your life choices will be measured. According to my faith and understanding “ … men are that they might have joy.” My choice of how I choose to be tithed adds to my joy. I hope your choice of how to be tithed offers you similar comfort and peace of mind.

All that I have, regardless of whether it is defined as "surplus" or, "interest," regardless of whether or, not it is framed in modern or ancient terms is the Lords and is given to me by his grace. I receive it willingly. I return it willingly measured in value as 10%.

By God's grace, otherwise the prayer would not be opened with the utterance of "Lord."

As I said do as you choose. Being generous is never a bad thing.

Your comment on my comments strike me as self righteous and pompous. That's unfortunate.

The scriptures say we are to pay on our surplus, or our interest. The 1970 statement, which has been quoted in every edition of the Handbook of Instructions since then, does nothing to alter the scriptures.

The beautiful thing about the law of tithing is that it's between you and God. I have no problem whatsoever answering that I'm a full tithe payer. I'm glad you can say the same. Maybe we should hang out at the temple some time, you know, catch a session and have a bowl of soup in the cafeteria.

My comments were simply meant to clearly define why I choose to pay tithing, based upon what I consider gross. Sorry, if I offended you. If I come across as self-righteous or pompous, then I will answer for it. Are you inviting me to join you in the temple? I hope to attend the BYU vs Virginia game. Maybe we can arrange to meet at the DC temple before or after.

I don't consider it being generous. I do it as an act of faith.

Sure, but if we go to the DC temple we'll have to skip the soup. They stopped serving food there a while back. Also, I think my wife might require that we do sealings or baptisms. That's just where we are in our family file right now. Drop me a line as the date gets closer and we'll see what we can work out.

Whatever. You just want to skip the soup because the food doesn't taste as good to people who aren't really worthy to be there. You can't fool us, man.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I consider myself a faithful man. It is a statement I use frequently to describe myself. I use it regularly in my professional life. It is met with inquisitive respect. I am sorry that it may have been read as a statement in contrast or comparison. That is not how it was meant.

My tone is even, despite the perceived pomposity. I may well be pompous, but truly my intent was to be articulate; clear and unambiguous in my language.

no, I'm dead serious. It's a ghost town down there, which is a shame because the soup, especially the chowder was pretty good. You can bring your own food and eat it, but they don't even have so much as a microwave to warm up leftovers in.

I was kidding. Mostly. I guess my point is that it seems kind of tough to define what it costs to live. But I am totally fine with idea of donation amounts being open-ended and left to individual interpretation. I use a complex and somewhat arbitrary way to come up with my amount. I have a couple of LLCs that result in pass-through income, much of which is taxed at the max rate and then put back into the companies (without ever passing through my hands). There is no way I am going to pay tithing on that money. Maybe if we sell the companies someday I will pay tithing on the sale profit.

IMHO, he wasn't being pompous. He was using a weighty tone of speaking. Just a literary device. He chooses his method of tithe, and he advocates letting everyone else use their own method to calculate tithing. Perhaps you thought him self righteous because he was using the same speaking conventions that are often used at the pulpit?
