My bishop put the t-set sign up sheet on his office door last week. His plan is to complete everything before thanksgiving. The sheet was filling up quickly because I think everyone else wanted to get it out of the way, too.

The only problem is that he made appointments in 5 minute increments. What an impending disaster. By the end of the day there will be an hour long backlog.

My wife signed up for this Saturday but I will be out of town

Every year I try to convince my wife that tithing settlement is a pointless exercise and has no impact whatsoever on your temple worthiness or anything else. Thus far she still insists on going. But I think she might capitulate someday so I keep trying.

My bishop tried 10 minute appointments last year and it was a disaster.

This year he announced he will be using 15-minute increments and hopes for a better result.

I am the same way. I have not been to tithing settlement in years, the bishop always ends up calling us and says he doesn't want to declare for us. I told him to go ahead and declare for us I am fine with it.

How long does this conversation have to take?

For a couple that should take no more than 2 minutes. I think this would be the majority of people who sign up for tithing settlement.

Statements like that crack me up.

I guarantee my bishop wouldn't care if I just e-mailed him. He would probably be happy. One less interview to deal with.

We always take the first appointment of the day, which is usually 7am. We're done by 7:10 and then go to breakfast.

I've seen couples mail in a letter declaring their status.

Same here. I can't remember the last time that we went. It is a mutual understanding.

If it were that simple, we could completely eliminate it. And since the actual tithing portion of the settlement interview usually is that simple, I do think we should completely eliminate it.

Then you and I are in agreement. I don't know why all the other stuff gets added in.

I think most Bishops use it as a reason to check on the flock make sure everyone is doing ok and their needs are being met. I am sure many food orders and bills have been oaid after tithing settlement.

My wife and I made the decision earlier this year to buy the house we had been renting for 18 months. Doing so put us in a situation in which we missed a couple of months of tithing and would not be able to declare full tithing payers. (I've always been under the philosophy that the Lord doesn't look at tithing through the lens of a calender. If you miss a check or two, you repent and pick up where you left off, not worry about making up for the lapse with back pay.) My wife is worried about the bishop taking away the temple recommends that we don't use. I told my wife to just not sign up for tithing settlement. She's convinced that if we don't sign up, they'll track us down and be even more forceful in their punishments. I told her that I'm glad that I don't have to go through life worrying about such weird things.
I told him he was a goddamn Nazi Stormtrooper.
