For those of you who would like to eliminate tithing settlement altogether, you need to let others know not to bring large donations to tithing settlement. There is a reason this very temporal practice exists under the guise of spirituality, and it's not because bishops enjoy it.

I always liked TS. It is a time to visit with the people you rarely see during the year. I always felt bad when an active family wouldn't show up, mainly because I always wanted to acknowledge and thank them for their service. Plus, I always enjoyed the homemade cinnamon rolls, bread, and cookies I was given throughout the day.
Any of you who are in the business of scheduling TS. I highly recommend the full-day Saturday approach. I would rather spend a couple Saturdays and get it all done, than multipe evenings and Sunday afternoons. The clerks would usually split the time, so no one, other than me, had towastespend their whole weekend at the church.

Unfortunately, even if you go to TS to cut a check, you are doing so unnecessarily. You dont have to be a full tithe payer at that exact moment, you just have to live the law of tithing. Skip TS, give the Bishop a break, and submit your check on Sunday.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostFor those of you who would like to eliminate tithing settlement altogether, you need to let others know not to bring large donations to tithing settlement. If we have to conduct pointless worthiness checks, we should do an annual Law of Chastity settlement. That would be way more interesting, I think.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I go to tithing settlement because my bishop wants us to be there. He's a good guy and a friend, and if it makes him happy to have my family show up, I don't mind taking ten minutes on a given day to show up.I'm like LeBron James.

I'm not telling anyone they shouldn't pay tithing! I'm merely pointing out that tithing settlement . . . um . . . gets results. If people would just pay their tithing in the normal course, instead of bringing it to tithing settlement, I suspect tithing settlement wouldn't be nearly as emphasized. And for those people who don't pay tithing all year long, and then bring an entire year's tithing to tithing settlement, well, let's just say they're not exactly helping.Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostWow. I don't think there is any question about the motivation for tithing settlement.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI'm not telling anyone they shouldn't pay tithing! Right. So if we know the reason, then we can all do our part to eliminate that reason.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI don't think there is any question about the motivation for tithing settlement.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

on a weekday, when you are not already at the chapel, it takes you only 10 minutes to gather your family, change clothes, go to the Church, have your interview, go back to your house, and change again.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View Post1. Oh, I don't disagree with you at all (and my own experience as clerk backs this up completely). I guess I didn't expect you to be the one to point it out.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI'm not telling anyone they shouldn't pay tithing! It's a bit of weak admission on your part that you were wrong about the bishop wanting us to be there, but coming from you, I'll take it. Thanks!Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Poston a weekday, when you are not already at the chapel, it takes you only 10 minutes to gather your family, change clothes, go to the Church, have your interview, go back to your house, and change again.

Back in the day, I had my kids pay tithing on all birthday/Christmas money. I thought it a good way to teach them the principle. One year I had realized that one of them didn't pay from gift money. At tithing settlement I naively said she wasn't a full-tithe payer. This was before I realized that she was going to bring the tithe-paying statistics of the ward down. Oh well. At least she is on the church records paying one partial year of tithingOriginally posted by byu71 View PostComments in another thread brought a question to mind that makes me wonder how others feel.
Let's say at Christmas you give each of your kids $10,000 (I use that figure because $100 is like a normal present). Although done at Christmas it isn't like it is done every Christmas.
Should the kids pay tithing on it? If my kids asked, I would say no, I already paid on it. It is after tithing funds.
I realize in the strictest terms it is an "increase" to them, but if that is the case should I deduct it from my years increase?
