    • I learned in church today that:

      1. The original oil paintings by local members of the SLC Temple and the First Vision that have hung in the building since the 1960's cannot be hung on the walls in the building hallways, only in the bishop's office. Only officially approved artwork may be hung in common areas of the church buildings.

      2. We can't even ask SLC to reschedule our stake conference in the future because it conflicts with Christmas in April. The stake president said he won't do it, even though we have to only do tiny projects so the men can go to the Saturday meetings. My comment to them that it felt Pharisaical to miss out on service to go to a meeting wasn't well received. I got a text message later about it telling me that I'm "confused about what we're doing." Indeed, I am.

Agreed. I'm with the Pharisees on this one.
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Pellegrino was right. Mormons not only don't celebrate Easter, they've started flaunting it by celebrating Xmas in April.

IIRC, it is a charitable event.

              • While many are duds, every once in awhile we have a good F&T meeting and Sunday block in general. Yesterday was a good one. Started with our Bishop's return to the chapel after being out for 2 months undergoing his initial treatment for leukemia. He's been a good friend for a long time, so it was great to see him somewhere besides a hospital room.

We also had sweet, but rapidly deteriorating, old lady in the ward gave a 10-15 minute thanktimony, mentioning close to 75% of the ward, most by clothing description, as she couldn't remember many names. Hard to lose patience with someone as nice as her who has such a long history with most of the long-timers in the ward.

We had a young mother get up and speak of hope and healing, one year after losing her newborn baby after he was alive for just a few hours.

One of the 17 year old young women spoke on the one year anniversary of her baptism, recounting how difficult it was initially to have her very-Catholic family not support her decision to join the church. She was thrilled to report how supportive they have become of her and her decision to stay active and go away to BYU-Hawaii this next year. She also became emotional over how many wonderful people have taken her in and made her feel like family this year.

And finally, we had a number of college-aged kids here this weekend, home for a short visit in between semesters. There was also one of the guys that just got home from spending two years under the watchful eye of President/coach Steve Cleveland in the Indianapolis mission. Having been in Young Men's for the better part of 14 years, I've watched these kids grow up, and I claim them, at least in part, as some of my own.

The second hour of church was spent hanging out in the foyer catching up with friends and with the returnees. The third hour was spend in my living room watching President Uchtdorf talks on youtube with my 9 year old daughter, who was doing her nebulizer treatment for seasonal allergies and asthma.

It was a very good day.

Anti-technology rants from old codgers make me laugh. This was on the Church website today:

At Goose's soccer game the other day some hipster dork with a flatbill, sleeve of star tats and gauged ears was commiserating with a balding guy in blue blockers about the good old days "I remember when you wanted to send something you had to lick a stamp! None of this snapchat crap". I didn't learn this at church, but Mormons don't have the market cornered on idiots.

                          • I am enjoying being the primary pianist more and more. After a few months in the calling, I don't stumble through the songs as much any more. Being in the primary is a breath of fresh air compared to SS and EQ. The kids are hilarious and the teachers are some of my favorite people in the ward.

This weekend my 20 month old daughter came running up to me as I was sitting on the couch yelling "watch ball hole!" Meaning she wanted to watch golf with me. Apparently she really enjoyed eating popcorn and watching the final round of the Masters with me last week. Sundays have been pretty good recently.

I knew I should have taken advantage of having a piano teacher as a wife. Well, maybe by the time I am back on the market for a calling I will have figured out enough piano to lobby for that one.

                              • On sunday my nephew had his farewell. It was pretty good and he is a good kid. His mother's family is predominately not LDS so he is already pretty adept at keeping religion non-mormon unique aspects centric. I got to be his escort through the temple as my brother, his father, doesn't do the temple. It was pretty cool but one funny event was when we switched rooms at the Twin Falls Temple the witness couple, a married couple, took each others hand as they headed down the aisle. He, as a new endowment, was the second man and he thought that was part of the ceremony. Some frumpy 75 year old got real disappointed when I came to the rescue and knocked his arm down as she thought she was going to go all CougarTown on him.

Saying that, after all these years and despite my totally emasculating embarassment to admit it the cheesiest of all cheesy mormon songs by JKP "In the Hollow of Thy Hand" can still get me emotional. That song was sung at all my older brothers' farewells and at mine. I really enjoyed my mission and it brought back some powerful memories and the associated emotions. Is this as bad as when the word got out I don't actually really hunt deer or elk?

To summarize I guess I learned "ITHOTH" can still make me emotional.
