      So, what's the answer?

I dragged my four kids up to the podium with my guitar and we squeaked out "I Often Go Walking" like the second team Von Trapp Family Singers. My daughters sang well, and my sons stared at the floor. I was able to tell a joke to lighten the mood, and there was no other musical number to make us look bad.

        • I appreciate anyone who will subject themselves to a musical number in church. It was actually the last venue in which I was still nervous before singing. Fortunately I am no longer as nervous when performing, but somewhat reluctant to volunteer based on the frequency with which I sing versus others in the ward. I do not want to be seen as putting myself out there to show off. Again good on you for using your talents.

Is this a good singing humblebrag? I will have to consult Pelado.

We have a friend in the ward who falls under the "frequent volunteer" category. For now, at least, she's had enough restraint to openly plug the upcoming cd that she's recording. It's so bad, that another friend's parents were visiting a few weeks ago and the mom mentioned to me, "I'm pretty sure she sang last time we were here."

I admit to being an above average singer. I also appreciate when others sing or otherwise contribute because the intermediate hymn is way overused.

So did the program say that the song she was singing was from her upcoming CD? I will have to keep that in mind if I ever record a CD.

singing is a wonderful talent. very cool. some of the most spiritual moments at Sac for me are while singing hymns or listening to others sing. i do not count myself among the talented singers.

Amen. Nothing gets me on a spiritual high like a good version of His Hands or El Shaddai.

Reminds me of a time in which I was asked to sing for new beginnings in our ward. Unfortunately they did not allow me to choose my piece but asked me to do His Hands. I sang with a bit more drama than I usually allow for church settings and got everyone in the room but two to well up with tears. One did not cry because she is my wife and accompanist and has seen my shenanigans before. The other did not because English was not her native language and some of the emoting was lost on her. She did however recognize my efforts and later asked my wife if I was trying to make people cry. Hearing my wife's response in the affirmative, she stated, in what seemed to be a joking manner, that I was an awful person. I guess it doesn't matter whether it was joking or not because with regard to Mormon Pop music I am an awful person.

So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I am going to keep doing the best I can and serve my calling faithfully. We have a lady that wants her husband driven home right after sacrament. By right after I mean the volunteer needs to be out front waiting for her and her husband and if the volunteer driver isn't out there she drives him home and she gets very ugly with us when she gets back. I mean raises holy hell. She got on me pretty good in front of my son Sunday and the volunteer was looking for her inside the building. I told the Bishop that was the last time she gets on me because she isn't satisfied with our service. My comment about turning down callings is in regards to being a Bishop or serving in the Bishopric again. I was pissed Sunday but I'm ok now.
