This is why I hate this thread. I was stoked to go see Dunkirk. Now that all of you are praising it, the contrarian in me is going to look for everything wrong with it, and I'll end up giving it a "meh" rating.

Ditto! Hope to see you at the Sony Metreon in SF where filsdepac is taking me on a boys night out. I don't usually care for IMAX but reviewers have said this is the way to go. Despite the hype, I'm going in with fairly low expectations as Nolan strikes me sometimes as too clever for his own good. Still, I'm looking forward to it.

P.S. If Trump sees it I suspect he won't like it because he prefers heroes who don't retreat.

I call it higher than a meh but not great.

I have two criticisms. And both together was what left me just a tad bit disappointed, based on the high reviews.

1. the typical Nolan complaint: unnecessary plot complications and unclear-muffled dialogue (maybe it's just my ears?) further amplifying the confusion.
2. this isn't really a spoiler since it's an historical event but i'll the spoiler tags

Spoiler for plot spoiler:

my understanding of the historical event is that there were 300,000+ troops evacuated. In the film, you never saw more than a few thousand on the beach. In the final evacuation scene, there couldn't have been more than a few hundred that left in the small number of boats they showed. In the film, we see a few planes, a few big Navy ships, 20-50 (?) of the small civilian boats--they only showed the sweeping scene that showed all the boats a couple times and it seemed like about that number. I'm waiting for some explanation for this or some back story to explain this was a small piece of the total evacuation or whatever, but due to #1 above, ie the unnecessarily complicated telling of the story, there's no way to know.

So, both of these combined left me feeling just a touch confused. But on the plus side: absolutely stunning cinematography, engaging story, and overall a beautiful film.

I'm not sure I'll see Dunkirk (Brian's command notwithstanding), but even watching the trailer brings up a small pet peeve, which is this: Why can't Nolan realize there are more than 10 total actors out there?

Looks like this movie has Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy. Both were in Nolan's Batman films. Both were in Inception. Marion Cotilliard was also in Inception and the Dark Knight Rises. Anne Hathaway was in the Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar. Michael Caine, as far as I can tell, is in all of these movies (IMDB says he has an uncredited role as a radio operator in Dunkirk).

Yes, this was another annoyance. I didn't want to seem too negative on the film, because I did overall enjoy it. But it is a little annoying when all of the Allied soliders are also Batman characters.

This is a dumb critique. Many directors favor working with actors over and over. Tim Burton, Quentin Tarantino, and Wes Anderson spring to mind.

One of the coen brothers is married to McDomrand, as I recall, so that might be an excuseable exception. Woody ALlen also tends to use the same actors repreatedly, but that works for him becasue he is like the ColdPlay of cinema, making pretty much the same film over and over, but each time it is enjoyable.

I haven't sen Dunkirk yet, but will see it soon.

I am seeing Dunkirk tonight, despite initial reservations.

Saw, The Big Sick, which is a romantic comedy based on real life events. I saw the movie without any foreknowledge of the movie and without any expectations. It was surprisingly entertaining, timely with the formulaic ending. But it worked as far as romantic comedies can work. The Pakistani lead actor was smart without any over-acting against the somewhat cartoonish acting of his parents. Holly Hunter and Ray Romano also make the movie fun, especially Hunter.
