Notorious - Old Hitchcock thriller in which Ingrid Bergman is asked by the Feds to spy on a group of Nazis in post-WWII Brazil. Cary Grant plays her handler. Watched with modern eyes, the most noteworthy scene is probably when Cary Grant sits nonchalantly as Bergman is drunk driving, then punches her in the face to make her stop. Not a scene that would play well today. Overall it was pretty good but I was expecting Third Man-level good, which it was not. I have no problem watching old films, but Rio sure feels wasted on black and white and fake backgrounds. Grant and Bergman were great, as was Claude Rains.
War on Everyone - Latest from John McDonagh, in which Micheal Pena and Alexander Skarsgard play corrupt cops trying to take ill-gotten gains from a crime lord for themselves -- in Albuquerque of all places. The two leads are likable despite playing totally unlikable characters. Theo James plays the evil British kingpin, and I don't know how much is his fault versus the writing, but he's terrible. Some of the dialogue is great, some is kind of cringey indie banter. Overall it feels like the first draft of a better movie. In that regard, it reminded me of the other McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths, but i liked this one better. Not nearly as good as The Guard though. Overall, I would call it not very good but somehow more likable that it should be. Skarsgard and Pena need to be in more movies. But no more pretending Pena can keep up with Skarsgard in a foot chase, as multiple times in this. This one is on Netflix.

Finally, a fun, entertaining and original night at the movies after a long drought. It's weird that Baby Driver is showing on a single screen at the Multiplex, while dreck like Transformers occupies 4-5. Directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, End of the World), Baby Driver provides thrills, laughs, and even a few thought-provoking moments (but few, to be sure) as it follows the brief career of a young wheel-man in a gang of bank robbers headed by Kevin Spacey. Even the missus, who tends to recoil at R-rated themes, gave it thumbs up. The excellent, eclectic and nearly nonstop score is an integral part of the very well-crafted movie. Rather than spoil the adventure with further plot exposition, I'll simply give the movie a very strong recommendation. Watch the trailer if you want some details--the movie is better.

I rarely see movies in theaters, other than the occasional kid movie. I'm going to try to see this one. I also think I'll actually make an effort to see the Big Sick, as part of my policy that I'll watch pretty much anything that is written or directed by a former member of the State. It is similar to my Paul Rudd policy.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostFinally, a fun, entertaining and original night at the movies after a long drought. Baby Driver, meh. A little disappointed. I felt like the characters were either overacting (Spacey, the guy from Mad Men, the guy from Walking Dead) or were just plain dull (the two kids). Jamie Foxx was great, though.Last edited by jay santos; 07-01-2017, 07:23 AM.

Baby Driver- Not a bad little flick with a nice soundtrack. I did feel like he was missing a pearly white jacket with a scorpion on the back, though. :/ That first scene was nutty. And Jaime Foxx actually did come off as pretty menacing.
Despicable M3: The usual, but Trey Parker's character did provide some genuine belly laughs with some of their use of 80s throwback music gags. What can I say?

Lots of tired tropes. Plot drivers (pun!) that made no sense at all. A way too long, never-ending final action scene a la every superhero movie ever, only to rush through the denouement.
Did I mention bad acting? The kid is seriously awful. I get he's supposed to be a little awkward, but he's just awful and wooden. And really, he has no rhythm for playing someone whose world revolves so completely around music. (The girl who plays his love interest is even worse in every aspect.)
I guess I can understand why this would have a fresh rating, but sitting at 97%? Ridiculous.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

The problem with RT, obviously, is that the rating system is purely binary--the critic either liked it or didn't, without any scale. Most people liked it and, as noted above, I liked it quite a bit, though Citizen Kane it wasn't. The tired tropes (chases were pretty much defined by Bullitt and The French Connection a half century ago) were, for me, overcome by the fact that there was virtually no green-screening, and the precision with which the director tied in the score was exceptional. I dislike action sequences in most current films but BD's didn't bother me at all. The ending, while no more plausible than most of the movie, was satisfying.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostThat show was pretty much garbage. BTW, while I don't disagree strongly with your Elgort assessment, I continue to find Cousin Rose very likeable, but only to the extent a geezer 40 years her senior is allowed to do so.

I liked Baby Driver, though no way is it a 97% movie. It was an uneven movie; I think it was trying too hard to get the audience to empathize with Baby. It should have stuck with the stylized action feel.
Having said that, the acting was pretty solid. The scene in the diner where Fox was guessing Hamm's previous life was great. I thought Baby was an interesting character. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be this, but I read his character as someone on the autism spectrum. The music in his life gives him expression that he doesn't normally have. Just a thought of mine though.
Solid 'B' for me."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

Spotlight was superbly acted with Mark Buffalo and Michael Keaton giving solid performances. The depth of the scandal was unknown to me, and the tendency for 6% of all priests to abuse children was a shocking number. Also the fact that 50% of all priests, if true, makes sense.
It also caused me to reflect how the LDS church had to mitigate its protocol with new procedures to avoid being hit by the lawsuits for failing to identify members with sex abuse convictions and confessions.
A solid A- for me."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Baby Driver was awesome. You haters are crazy!
Good stylized action, not totally predictable, solid performances, good music, what's not to love?

The Big Sick made us two-for-two in recent enjoyable moviegoing experiences. Starring and co-written by Kumail Nanjiani (Dinesh from Silicon Valley), the RomCom traces his relationship with a white woman while his Pakistani family is forcing him to meet dozens of Pakistani females as part of the arranged marriage process that he's expected to endure. This is familiar territory if you've seen Meet the Patels, but this is an even better movie. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter are great as the parents of his white girlfriend and the conversations between themselves and with Kumail while the young woman goes through a lengthy, medically induced coma that make the movie.
Crisp, believable dialogue, plenty of laughs, and no bullets, green screens or CGI-- Mrs. PAC was very entertained. A fun two hours.
