  • Still Walking - Excellent Japanese family drama. A son and his sister return to their parents' home for their yearly commemoration of the death of their older, more favored brother. The parents are somewhat suspect parents and everyone struggles to come to terms with everyone else's choices. Very well acted and directed. Slow but good. Same director as After Life, which I remember being good but too slow. Recommended, with the caveat that it is subdued.

Wonder Woman - Surprisingly fun. One of the better superhero movies. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine were great. They should turn over more of the DC movies to Patty Jenkins.

Lost City of Z - Follows Percy Fawcett's obsession with finding "Z," what he believed was an ancient metropolis somewhere in the Amazon. Charlie Hunnam is very good as Fawcett. Probably his best performance. Robert Pattinson is good as his assistant/friend who accompanies him into the jungle and Sienna Miller is good as his wife. The new Spiderman plays his son. I recommend it. It's a patient movie, more about his drive than about adventure (it shows multiple trips to the Amazon, as well as his participation in WWI). Recommend this one as well. Based on a book that grew out of a New Yorker article about the author's study of Fawcett. I plan to read the book now.

This is familiar territory if you've seen Meet the Patels, but this is an even better movie. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter are great as the parents of his white girlfriend and the conversations between themselves and with Kumail while the young woman goes through a lengthy, medically induced coma that make the movie.

Crisp, believable dialogue, plenty of laughs, and no bullets, green screens or CGI-- Mrs. PAC was very entertained. A fun two hours.
      Ditto.

        • Saving Private Ryan - a classic that has held up beautifully over time. I watched it on Memorial Day. I love almost everything about the movie, but mostly I love when Tom Hanks whispers to Private Ryan "earn this". We are obviously all in the same place as Ryan at that point and should have the same respect for what the soldiers did for us all in WW2. We need to all earn what they did for us.

Anywhere But Here - even though it had Natalie Portman I only made it 45 minutes in. I only remember Susan Sarandon buying a Mercedes and then driving a lot. Pretty boring flick. MJ liked it, maybe because it was about a mother/daughter relationship?

Independence Day - the original one. We watched it on Independence Day. Pretty lame movie but the kids enjoyed it. It has enough tough guy stuff to make it fun and Will Smith is always good. Still haven't seen the new one and probably never will.

He went on to work for Nixon (he has a tattoo of Nixon's face on his back), Reagan, Dole, and W. But his piece de resistance is Donald Trump, whom Stone had been pushing toward the Presidency since the '80s. Though not as much in the forefront as other Trump advisers, he may be ultimately the most responsible for the situation we're in today. The guy's very smart and a total scumbag. Watch and weep for the state of American politics.
            I watched. And wept.

I couldn't help but think of Trump's "Drain the swamp!" mantra. What a complete load of horseshit. He is a billionaire tied to some of the sleaziest people in American political history.

Jon Ronson (the author of You've Been Publicly Shamed) has a small book about Stone, Alex Jones and Trump. It's sad the country fell for those deplorables.

I heard a really good talk from a sister from Florida who has no pioneer ancestry. So regardless of the inspirational nature of Dunkirk, I think you owe me 3.5 cans of allspice.

Despite that fact there are no women and few people of color in it? Seems like that movie is on the wrong side of history.

                          • Watched Logan last night. As a self-proclaimed hater of comic book movies, I have to grudgingly admit it wasn't too bad.
