I just realized The Lobster was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the Greek Director of Dogtooth. That movie gave me nightmares for weeks.

Harry Potter 3- the Prisoner of Azkaban. Much better than I remembered it-- probably because I haven't read the book for well over 10 years or so and wasn't disappointed with all the omissions from the book, etc."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

The Night Before - Three friends get together for their yearly Christmas shenanigans, as part of a tradition for cheering up the one who lost his family that time of year a decade before. Had a few funny parts but overall was not very good. Lots of wasted cameos, dull scenes, and jokes that don't land. Best part was Michael Shannon as their benevolent weed dealer. Do not recommend.
The Nice Guys - Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as PIs trying to solve a mystery in 70s LA. Second time seeing it, still very good. Do recommend, though not for kids at all.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople - Sam Neill and a chubby kid who had never acted but is great here wind up on the run from the authorities in the New Zealand wilderness. Very highly recommend this one. Most enjoyable movie I've seen in the theater in some time. See it if you get the chance.

Blood Father - Mediocre genre piece in which ex-con Mel Gibson has to come to the aid of his estranged daughter, who crossed some nasty people. Gibson is great in it but the movie is totally forgettable. No great set pieces, villain is lame, etc. Gibson needs to speed up the rehab of his image so he can be in more and better movies. Get the Gringo was better.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates - Mediocre comedy in which Zac Efron and Adam Devine are ordered to find nice girls to take to their sister's wedding and are bamboozled into taking crazy persons Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza. A few laughs but not much. The actress who plays the sister is pretty good and Zac Efron actually may be best of the 4 headliners. Aubrey Plaza had a few good scenes but mostly was as bad as on Parks and Rec. Not worth seeing.
The Game - Banker Michael Douglas is gifted an all-encompassing entertainment experience for his birthday by his younger brother. A lot of people try to poke holes in it but I really like it. Second time seeing it, still enjoyed it. Definitely would recommend it.
Train to Busan - Decent Korean zombie movie. Workaholic fund manager is persuaded to take his daughter to Busan just as a zombie outbreak occurs. Passengers on the train try to avoid danger on and off the train. Not a huge fan of zombie movies, but this is probably the best I've seen since 28 Days Later. Won't be the best movie of the year or anything, but a fun one with decent action.

I saw this my freshman year in college and absolutely loved it. Saw it several times in the theater, each time with new people to see their reactions. I'm sure it has lost a little of the luster for me, but I still really like it.Originally posted by Armenag View Post

The Nice Guys was above average. Some notes on Magnificent 7:
First of all, lots of fun. This films is a paean most of all not to the previous Magnificent Seven, nor the Seven Samurai, but to Disney's Swiss Family Robinson.
So many classic western motifs. I cant remember most of them, but the lead woman is your typical Madonna vs. Whore. She starts out in Church, progresses to saloon whore, and back to madonna again. Her dress transfers with her, from modesty to hussy back to modestly and in one of her last scenes she is shown with a crucifix over her left shoulder.
So many borrowings from Game of Thrones, makes me realize how groundbreaking that series really is.
The treatment of Native Americans is standard: All NAs must be good, except if they are bad, then they must always be killed by a "good" NA who must always condemn the "bad" NA as a disgrace to his race right before the Coup de Gravy.
Boy the Peter Saarsgard can act. I've seen bad guy characters done grimly, done foppishly, done nicely. This is the first time I've seen such a bad guy displayed intermittently with vulnerability and creepiness.

Now You See Me - Dumb movie that had one redeemable quality, the chest of the lady horseman. She had a very nice chest and they obviously new that and used it well during the film
Now You See Me 2 - As dumb as the first but they got rid of the nice-chest lady and brought on a very unattractive one. Stupid all around.
The Pianist - Just as good the second time but a tad long. Absolutely love near the end when he plays the piano piece and then almost gets shot because he's wearing the Nazi jacket
Swiss Army Man - Fun and not serious, but serious. Loved the way they shot it all and the absurdity of the whole thing wasn't too overplayed. I also laughed quite a bit as they used humor in the right places at hte right time to keep the plot from getting heavy...but they laid off of too much slapstick humor.
Free State of Jones - Good enough of a movie that I would have liked to have seen it in the theater but kind of weird that it ends up being an autobiography type of film as I was expecting it to be more about the group and not the one guy. Oh well, it was definitely worth the time. I'll share a little more about this film in a different thread at a later time.
All the Way - Movie about LBJ that was very well acted, whcih it should ahve been given the cast. But the writing sucked and it felt way too choppy. Cranston did a good job but the writing made LBJ seem like the moodiest of mood swingers. Plus, it kind of ended in a weird spot. it's almost like they ran out of funding and just had to end the movie or maybe they were planning on a second installment but it didn't get funded. I think it would have been better divided up into multiple parts, kind of like the John Adams docu, but obviously without as many episodes. It's good and worth seeing, but it could have been more special."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Masterminds-- Jared Hess is at it again. This time with a fantastically cast, pretty hilarious movie. I like Zack Galifianakis, but Jason Sudeikis steals the show for me. Same absurdist humor we're used to from Jared Hess, just framed a little differently in a "based on true events" type of movie."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

In Order of Disappearance - Stellan Skarsgard is a plow driver in rural Norway seeking revenge for the death of his son at the hands of drug dealers. That gang's Serbian competitors eventually become involved. Touches a bit on themes of revenge and fatherhood, but mostly a pretty straight-forward, very dark comedy with some gorgeous shots of snowy Scandinavia. Really liked this one. Definitely recommend it. Fairly violent - every time a character is killed, their name is shown on a black screen (hence In Order of Disappearance).

The Great Beauty - Italian movie about a journalist who made his name writing one great novel decades ago and has lived as king of Rome's fashionable high life since. He hits 65 and looks around. Really beautifully shot, well-acted. Best looking movie I've seen in a while. Not family friendly, but if you don't mind that, I very highly recommend it. First movie I've seen by Paolo Sorrentino and it's a great one.
The trailer gives a pretty good feel for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koxRDhAQOpw

Jack Reacher - never go back: pretty much the Walmart of Bourneish movies. I kind of wish I hadn't gone at all.
