  • The Crash Reel is showing on HBO.

Great movie. Very inspiring and interesting for people with a Utah connection and/or an interest in snowboarding/skiing.

    • Some of you know that I hate hate hate sports movies. They are always so predictable, so manipulative, so fakey motivational. If I had to choose, my two favorite sports movies are Tin Cup (because it doesn't follow the same trite script) and Field of Dreams, which lets be honest, was not a baseball movie so much as a Daddy movie.

Anyway, I finally watched a sports movie that I loved. Undefeated, a documentary about an Memphis inner city school struggling to turn around a terrible football team. It changed my view of HS football coaches as bullies attempting to relive their earlier glory days. The coach in this movie was truly a heroic guy. From Redbox.

I saw Before Midnight the other day. I did not see the first two in the trilogy. I liked it a lot. Painful at times to listen to, but I thought it was pretty good, if a little too talky.

Do you hate Hoosiers? Chariots of Fire? Bull Durham? Rocky? Raging Bull? The Natural? Caddyshack? Slap Shot?

              • Yes. Yes. Yes. That was good. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

Also hate the one about the college football team who died on the airplane. And the HS football team with the player called Sunshine. And the US Olympic Hockey team movie. I don't mind watching reruns of the original games, I just kinda dislike the movie treatment of the original stories.

The Fighter? The Wrestler? Million Dollar Baby? Seabiscuit? The Sandlot?

Most of the Disney sports movies I didn't care for. The Rookie, Glory Road, Radio, etc. But I liked Remember the Titans (even with the campy moments and historical inconsistencies). Miracle is by far the best of them and I think a pretty solid sports movie. We Are Marshall just wasn't that good.

What about Rad? North Shore? Big Wednesday? Gleaming the Cube? Thrashin'?

LOL. Classic. I was such a sucker for those 80's martial arts flicks. I think there were like 3 or 4 of those Best of the Best movies. No Retreat, No Surrender. Only The Strong. American Ninja and all the other Ninja movies. Gymkata. Kickboxer. Bloodsport and Karate Kid though were my faves.

                              • I saw a double feature last weekend. The Conjuring was the first show. Probably the best horror/haunt/possession/exorcism movie I've seen in years. While it certainly used its fair share of horror cliches (family dog won't go into the new house, etc.) they were subtle enough that didn't bother me like they usually do. The cinematography is stunning, and the plot and visual effects both held their own. All in all, pretty darn good. Also, it's a well-done period piece, so that always helps hold my interest.

The second movie was some Korean movie called Secretly, Greatly, about a North Korean spy stationed as a village idiot in South Korea. Totally sucked. Awful. I did enjoy being the only non-Asian in the movie theater. I imagine I felt an awful lot like ts258 at Sunday dinner with his future in-laws.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body.
