About once a year, a student will come by my office and dicker with me about points lost on an exam. It usually stems from poor penmanship, especially when they write in cursive and I cannot tell if their word ends in an A or an O. There is usually a bit of them insisting that it's one or the other (whatever it's supposed to be), even though any reasonable person would read their writing a different way. It's at this point, that, without speaking a word, I reach down and open the bottom drawer to my desk and extract a ten-inch-long purple velvet rectangular case. I snap the two brass hinges, and extract my grandfather's professional-grade 3x wood-handled magnifying glass. The little audible gasp I always hear when they first see what it is, is so satisfying. It has a mahogany handle, a brass ring around a very thick piece of green-tinted glass, 4" in diameter. As I peer down at their writing, the glass doesn't lie, and all debate ceases. This happened tonight, which means that because it's so early in the school year, I might get to do it again. Ahhhh!
