Broke Matt Barkley's Orange County season yardage record as a junior. Seems like a solid pickup.

Is this the first commit for 2013?
Not a great offer list. What is the scoop on that?

Utah received a commit from Sam Tevi (I think that is his name) this past week.

What I've seen speculated is that he's on the small side for the PAC-12, but the Utah coaches see something in him.

Maybe but that sounds really improbable.

He passed for over 4,000 yards and 40 TDs in one season and also went to the finals in CIF sectionals. He plays in Lake Forest, which means that he likely went up against Mission Viejo, RSM, Trabuco, Tesoro, and maybe Mater Dei here or there. His size is just fine. Those numbers would interest ANY coach.

I'm not knocking the kid. He sounds like another one of those gems that Utah finds and everyone else misses, but it doesnt add up. If you pass for 4000 yards and 40 TDs in one season, you should have several offers. And Montana State or South Dakota State are not among them.

        Was he previously injured?

He self-identified as a Utah commit early?

Manning noted that he developed a good relationship with assistant coach Aaron Roderick during the recruiting process and is looking forward to being a Pac-12 quarterback. He's still working on details concerning his future, including the possibility of enrolling early.

              Again, doubtful.

I have no idea but this is a weird one. I bet he does really well. He certainly has the stats to support such optimism.

Since nothing is official until LOI day, look for Montana State to really crank up the pressure.

Duh. If I would've read the whole DesNews article:

In addition to Manning, Utah's 2013 recruiting class also includes
                • defensive end Sam Tevi (Euless Trinity HS, Texas)
                • defensive end Myron Aiava (6-5, 270, Westminster HS, Calif.)
                • tight end Siale Fakailoatonga (6-4, 215, Cottonwood HS)
                • offensive lineman Lo Falemaka (6-4, 230, Cottonwood HS)
                • linebacker Felipo Mokofisi (6-3, 210, Woods Cross HS)
                • offensive lineman LeRoy Tanoai (6-4, 280, Notre Dame HS, Calif.)

The only credible critique that I have seen is that he does not have elite arm strength.

However, if schools are only watching his highlight film from last year, they likely would have legit concerns about his size. He is about 3 inches taller and 20-25 lbs heavier now than his Junior playing size. He was measured at the Nike event in SoCal(won MVP) and 6'2" 190 are legit measurement.

I think that he is a sleeper in the sense that the majority of top schools did not view him as a top tier recruit during his junior year(despite his gaudy #'s). The lack of size, which was a legit concern in 2011, and arm strength were why he was bypassed in the early recruitment of the 2013 class. By the time that he was able to show off at the camps in the spring, the majority of the Pac-12 had picked up the QB they wanted for 2013.

Utah missed on Bateman as their primary target, and were in the market later than most of the Pac-12. I know that Utah did not offer at least 2 4* QB's(Bruggman to WSU and Anu Solomon to Arizona) during the time prior to offering Manning, so they see something in Manning that they did not see in a few higher rated QB's.

That said, I really don't know why this kid doesn't have offers from schools like SJSU, SDSU, UNLV, et al. Unless the kid totally stonewalled them, I would think that he has enough polish to have at least multiple middle of the road D-1 offers.

Ha...another Mokofisi. The rough Spanish translation of that name always makes me laugh (the Andalucian pronunciation really).

thats really what I was getting at. Fine if he didnt pick up offers from Florida and Texas or whatnot, but even MWC or WAC schools passed on him? not a single one? even as insurance at backup?

This could prove to be a huge get for the Utes...finding a diamond in the bargain bin, so to speak. If you can figure out how to throw 4000 yards and 40 TDs in one season, you have figured out how to make plays despite your size. Karma says he will hit another growth spurt his senior year and roll into SLC at 6'4".

Kind of interesting history about Manning:

El Toro's Conner Manning eclipses Matt Barkley's passing record

If they throw that much, you can't look at yardage. I wonder how many attempts he had. It would be interesting to see his efficiency.

IIRC, his completion percentage was in the low 60's. Not efficiency, I realize, but it's a better metric than yardage only.

Where did you find his stats? Sure, 60% isn't that great, but then again, it depends on how far they are throwing it. I'd like to see his yards per completion and attempts per interception. Those are both usually pretty solid numbers to look at.
