I don't know when the last time I wasn't as happy about a Utah win over BYU as I should be. I'll take the win, but what bothers me are really two things: Utah's inability to convert on 3rd down and the Utes not being able to stop BYU on a few 3rd and long situations.
I'm still irritated about the first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter. BYU has 3rd and long - all Utah has to do is make a stop and it would have deflated BYU's spirit - but Hill completes the pass for first down then the next play breaks off a long run. Credit to Hill for getting it done, but it would have been game over right there had Utah taken care of business.
Ah well, I guess to paraphrase Billy, "That which we call a win by any other name ought to be as sweet, even if it isn't; I suppose I should just be happy about it, eh?"
I think your offense is just going to be one of those ones that lives and dies with big plays. If you can run the TE up the seam for 20 yards and get Dres out in space, it will be good. If not, it's feast or famine. Poole had that big run, but the rest of his carries were like 2ypc. BYU probably in the top 2 or 3 of defenses you'll see this year, so that's part of it, but I doubt you'll see an offense as inept as ours the rest of the year.
Taking away the read option for Wilson limited you as well, that was huge for Utah the last couple of weeks.
It makes me worried that guys like Mangum, who won the Elite 11, aren't going to want to play here.
I know the read option is all the fad right now, but I just prefer a pro style offense I guess.
if there's one thing we should have learned from jake heaps, taysom, and riley, it's that success at the high school level has almost no predictive value for college success.

Garrett Gilbert, Max Wittek, Case McCoy, Phillip Sims, Joe Southwick...college football is and has been inundated with highly touted HS QBs who can't play at the D1 level. I have to think some coaches are better than others at evaluating HS QBs, but it sure seems to be an absolute crapshoot for the most part.

In that case, let's let Billy Green be our future.
I'm loving UVACoug in this thread! Blaming refs, justifying throwing trash at refs, stating that Hill just needs to learn to throw before he's a superstar--great work all around. Why have I not noticed his posts before?
I never blamed the refs. In fact I said the refs didn't cause the loss. They were absolutely terrible though. Do you disagree?
Harder to become a BYU fan? Pussies. Go be a fan of someone else then.
I work at the UofU hospital and got my graduate degree from USU. A lot of good people at both institutions. But their fan personas are knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers.

I've been warned not to attempt to best you in an argument, therefore I should probably just agree with you on everything. For the record, I also agree with you that Taysom Hill will be a better qb when he learns to throw.

I disagree. He will be worse when he learns to throw.

I didn't think it hurt us that bad. Some calls hurt Utah. I thought we got really lucky on that challenge on the PI/tip. It seemed obvious that the PI contact came before the tip. The taunting call that kept the drive alive was also pretty questional. The last play of the game I think was probably a good no call. The holding on the Hine kickoff return I didn't see, but someone today told me there was a pretty obvious hold on the play. So I don't get why people are so upset about the officiating except just that generally that's what fans do when they lose.

Whatever else you can say about officiating, it wasn't the reason we lost. So whatever.
