  • The difference in mindset is summed up between playing to win and playing not to lose. I still think that if Crowton had said "I was playing to win, not playing to not lose" the quote becomes insignificant and dies. Instead he communicates it in a "win by 9 not 2" manner that sounds crazy.

The same thing can be said here. BYU was playing to win offensively. The play call was fine. The throw was hard, but on the money. The ball goes anywhere but where it went, and it's a non-issue, because we punt, stuff them and win the game. Is it a call I would have made? Probably not. But I get it. Offensively, we called the game to put us in a spot to pick up the first down, run out the clock and end it. Hindsight is 20/20.

Or, as Steve Spurrier has said...it's 50/50!

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

As for your earlier post about this being more like Arizona, I would think you are right and we will have a good year which for me is 9 wins. That may be the desire talking and not good sense, but I am of the opinion we have the talent and the coaching has a new attitude which will bring better results.
        lol.

You are a genius. How many other plays from last weekend can you properly predict now that the game is over?

However, you may have skipped my earlier post, someone should have taken into consideration how poorly the QB was playing and how bad the weather conditions were. IMHO that changes things from a go for it good call play to a bigger risk than you need to take play.
The play wasn't very risky. But since we are using hindsight logic I will take a shot...I definitely would not have run the ball which would have caused us to punt because we already had a punt blocked earlier in the game!

BYU, rated at #7 on the Misery Index was rated two spots below your #5 USC Trojans and two spots above #9 Texas. BTW, Nebraska deserved to make this list.

Taysom Hill reminds me a lot of Taylor Martinez of Nebraska. In fact, BYU's new offense appears very similar to what Nebraska has been running. IMO, if Hill can be accurate (or at least a threat) in the > 15 yard passing game, BYU will be successful on offense. Nebraska is still waiting for Martinez to develop that aspect of his passing game and it's going on 4 years. The good news is that BYU has a good defense to keep the Cougars in games; something that is lacking in Lincoln.

I agree that BYU's issues on its OL is most likely due to coaching and perhaps some recruiting "misses" with talent evaluation. Something similar occurred at Nebraska with coaching changes on OL/OC and Nebraska is still digging out. For decades, Nebraska had excellent coaching and talent evaluation with their OL. There was an OL factory in Lincoln and Nebraska simply developed quality OLinemen....until they didn't. And it wasn't because they could no longer find 6'3" 300 lb guys in the midwest. They lost the ability to develop 2-3* OL recruits into all-conference performers and started losing the higher ranked midwest recruits to Notre Dame and other programs. I wonder if something similar occurred in Provo. I don't follow BYU football as closely as most here, but what happened to the 24-year-old RM Senior O-Lineman that was good enough to warrant complaints from opposing fans that BYU had a RM edge by playing guys who were old enough to be NFL veterans?

            • Just before that fateful drive, I openly hoped that Jamaal not even touch the ball, that Hill not throw the ball, that we kill some clock, then punt and rely on our D to win the game. True story.

Anae admits that it was a bad decision, not sure why anyone would have a problem with the criticism. There were plenty of folks who thought it was an unnecessary risk at the time. Hindsight isn't needed. Even if the pass had been completed, it was still an unnecessary risk, which is why it was a bad decision, I suppose.

Phat is my witness. I had several UVA fans ask us why we threw on that third down.

And I had TCU fans telling me that Riley Nelson was one of the two best players on our team.

Like flystripper points out, the chance of that play going how it did were probably lower than us getting a point blocked again, seeing how well we adjusted to the near block immediately before the actual one.

Obviously not very bright UVA fans. The Why is rather obvious, whether or not one agrees with the decision is another question.

If you run the ball the chance of that play going how it did is 0%.

                        And then? We punt.
Did you see how close they were to a block on that first punt? How much better warning did we need? And We weren't even close to getting that punt off, bobble or not.

True. Interceptions happen on 0% of running plays. The play wasn't risky though. Shit happens on running plays too. I like the coach calling a play that gives you a good chance to get the first down in that situation. Anae is taking the blame for a "bad" call but I don't want him second guessing making a similar call in the future.

You're assuming a lot by thinking we'll be up by a few points with 2:30 to go in any game this season.
