All three of those schools have historically been better at identifying and using receivers than BYU. So beating those schools out for that position encourages me. Would I rather we beat out Florida State, Alabama and USC? Of course, but that won't happen on a regular basis.
I would never use Utah offering a player on offense as a good indicator of talent.

But you can take the larger view, which I am sure some LDS players do. That there is no guarantee of the NFL, and in fact that is unlikely, so you need to hedge your bets.

So, an LDS hedging his bets, he might often turn to BYU.

If football is all that matters, then maybe you select from a few schools and USC may be among them. However, some LDS kids are taught a larger perspective than football, so considering the other aspects might come into the equation.

Utah has had many talented receivers over the years. I can't speak for last year. And I am often jealous of your CB and defensive line talent.

The availability of "LDS girls" also has to come into play.

Some of the same reasons people turn down top 10 law schools, etc to attend BYU.

That is a large part of it.

My own offspring attends elsewhere but any time he heads home, all he can ask for, is finding out where the LDS girls are. (It is also why I went there in no small part).

                    • Again, a much better class than last year. I'm hopeful our run defense will be improved but still a bit concerned about the o-line. The big uglies used to be a foregone conclusion, so too were the quarterbacks I guess. I guess it's cyclical.

I'm just wondering why that if this is such a landslide victory for BYU in recruiting, why the 17-year old stalking sites are reflecting that the classes aren't that different.

Rivals has ranked Utah at 71 and BYU at 77. Average stars for Utah 2.61 and BYU 2.67

Scout has BYU ranked at 70 and Utah at 71. Average stars for Utah 2.63 and BYU 2.69

I'd be happy to trust your opinion, but after you talked up and praised BYU's class last year, I'm a little iffy on your claims about BYU's recruiting classes.

I believe that happens because of the cost of tuition.

Are you talking about this years class or an average over the last 17 years?
