What's the deal with Tukuafu? Am I right that Wells is being a petulant child in not granting him a release? Would it even matter as he would likely have to sit out this year anyway, right?

Seems like a really bad road to go down by Wells and USU to piss off the poly community over this.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. My guess is that this is coming from the AD. USU also didn't release that b-ball player to the Utes last year. I think it's extremely short sighted, and especially with Tukuafu will harm poly recruiting.

Do you really think that Wells is going to peel off many of the best Poly's away from BYU, er uh make that the only POLY HC in college football Kalani Sitake, and Utah? He knows that piss off the Poly community or release Tukuafu he is 1.) Going to lose Tukuafu and 2.) Not be able to recruit Poly's real well regardless.

This gives him the chance to throw some red meat to his blue mooseknuckled faithful who can feel that the stuck it to the BYU in a year where their deep contemplations will be who beats their beloved Aggies worse - Air Force football or Air Force basketball? Tender mercies that keep a fanbase alive.

But this is a win-win-win for the BYU. Joe T weighs two ate EE! Not a lot of tight ends at two-ate-EE. He needs to decrease his buttcrack cleavage, shall we say? So redshirting is the best option for him. He will be better for BYU as RS senior than he will be as oversized true freshman tight end. Further, this allows BYU to see if his coconut butt is going to stay big and perhaps OT or DE is where Brother JoeT finds a spot to play that best maximizes his girth and helps the BYU football team, which is admittedly my highest priority for him. Finally, BYU gets to do all this and not even have to waste a scholarship doing so and can appear to be the noble lover of rotund Poly blue chipper athletes! That my friends is better than a guilt free night of zipper sparks that middle aged men feel compelled to share semi-publicly 25 years later! Serious, BYU gets all this benefit and Utah State takes all the heat. Thanks Matt Wells!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

If Bushman and Moroni turn out to be as good as advertised and Balderee can hold down the blocking TE of things, then this will be a blessing in disguise.

The timeline of what's going on is very weird though. I may have some of this wrong, but here's what I've found:

Feb 2014 - Joe commits to USU
Feb 2014-Dec2016 - two-year mission fits in here somewhere? I heard he had knee issues so his mission was extended?
Dec 2016 - verbally reaffirms commitment to USU
Jan 2017 - enrolls at BYU and asks for release

So he is basically 3 years removed from his LOI signing. I found out today that LOIs are enforceable for 4 years, which is crazy since it seems they should be good for one year and then the NCAA transfer rules should then take over, which require him to sit a year but doesn't require the coach to release him. I get that Wells is within his right to not grant the release, and it's crazy that he's not granting it, but it really doesn't look good on his program to not grant it.

Also, does this mean that Wells is using one less scholarship than available? If so, how would that make one of the walk-ons feel to know a scholarship is available to be used for them but Wells is instead using his power to keep the scholarship to spite BYU.

But what of the moral high ground? I await further light and knowledge from Ole-Gregg.

            • Other usu athletes

They had a qb transfer a year ago maybe two. He wanted to go to washington, but usu wouldn't release hime to Uw, because "they played them in the future" was the excuse. The "future" was the year he would have had to sit out and redshirt. In the end he transferred to Oregon St.
So I think usu just likes to block and give kids that leave a hard time. Wells is most likely finished after this year would be my guess.
