You'd have to be equally stupid and out of touch to not know there is a Univeristy of... and a ... State in Utah just like everwhere else. Who cares about such people, if they really exist.
Come on, I'm guessing you have witnessed this first hand. You lived on the east coast for 3(?) years, your circle of opera friends (most likely) aren't huge sports fans, and you have learned first hand over the past four decades the misinformation people have in regards to the lds church (both those in and out of the church). You are correct, in that semi-serious sports fans know the difference between the two. However, non-western, non-sports fans likely don't know there is much of a difference -primarily, because they probably rarely if ever give either a university more than 30 seconds of thought a year.

Edit: I would put it as the equivalent to how most westerns think about Iowa vs or Iowa State or UVA vs. V-Tech. Most don't know the difference, and really don't care that there is one.

I challenge you to go to a real sports bar in Seattle to watch the Utah/Colorado game and talk to the folks that are there. Ask them the difference between Utah and BYU.
Bullshit. People in Seattle know the difference, just like they know the UK is on an island. I don't know anyone as stupid as you describe.

          This is pretty elitist stuff.

If you went to church you would come into contact with more of the 99%.

You're wrong. Anyone who has even casually learned about universities and how they are constituted wouldn't confuse them. Good grief. What social circles do you run in? Seriously, it's like not knowing the difference between the North Pole and Antartica.

                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Pretty elitist for to expect people to know the difference between private, religiously affiliated universities and a public univeristy bearing the name of the state in which it's located? Good grief. I don't think so.

I go to sports bars all the time. You are making me think you've never been outside the state of Utah. Actually, sports fans are more likely to not be confused by this than your average shmuck in the Occupy Seattle tent village.

You know, if the BCS drops AQ status for conferences, that could be a good thing for BYU. The stigma of being non-AQ wouldn't exist, because no one would be AQ.

On the flip side, BYU could go 11-1, get an invite to the Fiesta Bowl, and screw it up because of its demands for replay rights on BYUTV.

My social circle is nearly non-existent, but that is another conversation.

All I can draw upon is my limited experience in the world. When I was in DC and NoVa, living with two different Ute frat boys, I can attest that many (seemingly smart) people confused their university with mine during casual conversation.

On to more important stuff. I'm listening to a really cool piano cover of "Where's My Mind" by Maxene Cyrin, I've never heard before. I think I will have my son learn this. I like it.

                            Seriously, here's how it works.

When Utah was dominating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, 5 of my closest (non-LDS, college-educated, Texan) friends text messaged me stuff like "Your boys are kicking butt." "You must be loving this game."

Sure if they stopped and thought about it for a second they know that I went to BYU and this was Utah, but they know me as the Mormon dude from Utah and so there isn't much distinction between the schools in their minds.

The Rumble in the Rockies was just the pick-me-up I needed before going to bed. Nothing like a totally contrived rivalry game to bring a smile to my face. I'll bet there will be a boatload, literally, of red and black pirate Miami fans in attendance.

Even in the midst of a great stroke of good fortune Utah fails to allow a tradition to develop, opting instead to try and manufacture it by popular vote or out right theft.

True story. My old boss, Carnegie-Mellon graduate, world traveler, and big Pittsburgh Steeler fan was very excited in 2005 when the Steelers drafted Shaun Nua and Chris Kemoeatu because Steeler-Fans loved the guys they get from BYU. True story.
