Much more important than TV deals are:

1 - voting rights. All the new members must only agree to join if the bylaws are changed such that only football-only schools can vote on football matters and and on the membership of football-only schools.

2 - penalty-free exit options. The new members must agree to join only if, in the event that the BCS no longer gives an automatic birth to the Big East Conference--whether because the Big East loses AQ status, or the BCS doesn't concern itself with anything beyond the championship game--the new members are allowed to leave before the beginning of the next season.

BYU won't close shop, just become a sad shadow of the past.

No, Utah should never be seen as the Mormon school, too much polarized anti-Mormonism on the Hill to be the Mormon anything.

What is the difference between formally closing shop and symbolically closing shop?

In football, in all other places, most people view Utah as THE Mormon school and BYU as being its appendage.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

If that's what it takes to get rid of SU, then that's what it takes.

Having lived "other places" no one views Utah as the Mormon school and they recognize the rivalry. Utah is certainly on the rise, but I have yet to meet anyone who could even name a former Ute great, but everyone, even in SEC country will immediately bring up Young and McMahon.

Utah is going, in my opinion, to permanently leave BYU behind, but you are getting carried away.

In football, most people in the country have no idea that Utah and BYU are two separate schools.

It's been my experience they do. Do you have evidence to the contrary? Or are are you speaking from your experience?

When did they separate? The Topper was unaware they became separate.

Sorry for not recognizing your experience talking with most people in the country about BYU and Utah.
