Well, it was, except for the planes and the terrorists and the deaths. On the other hand, of course, there was institutionally-protected child rape.Originally posted by DU Ute View PostIf we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

espn op Ed piece that is way over the top. These sanctions were appropriate and certainly not too harsh. Tim Keown, the author, tries to make an argument that the NCAA was vindictive toward psu and that a "one year death penalty would have been more humane.". I don't get all this talk about being humane to psu in light of the fact that the NCAA was humane.
On another note, college football live had an excellent interview with psu's new coach and also showed psu players supporting each other. One player said "this program was not built by one man and it won't be destroyed by one man." hopefully happy valley will remember that paterno wasn't the only reason psu was so good and they will get on board with the new coach who has a great attitude about the role of college football on campus.

Probably the same reason a DA compels a guilty man to agree to a lesser chage. The crime you committed has maximum of 20 years of prison time without parol; we're offering you an 8-year sentance with a chance of parol after 4 years if you plead guilty to a lesser charge. The 4-year death penalty was the most the NCAA could do but there was little chance that would be the actual result.Originally posted by San Juan Sun View PostI never felt strongly one way or another about the death penalty, but can someone explain to me how PSU was able to negotiate down from 4 years of no football to the, by comparison, moderate sanctions they ended up with?
Wow, the majority of university presidents favored 4 years of no football. Penn State is very, very lucky to be playing football. And I'm kind of sickened that the NCAA backed down as much as they did.

A majority of university presidents favored a 4-year death sentence. Guess what, a majority of university presidents also favor increased revenue sharing for football. The majority of university presidents do not control the NCAA and call the shots. The power in the NCAA for football is controlled by the BCS universities. The Big Ten wasn't going to allow a 4-year dealth penalty for Penn St. and I would think neither would a lot of other BCS universities. IMO, the powers in the NCAA did not back down from anything. They made a business decision that allowed PSU to play football and remain on TV.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

ESPN is reporting that he is meeting with your buddy Lane today, so any possible travel could have hindered him being there.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostToday Michael Mauti and Michael Zordich (PSU players...and seniors) held a press conference flanked by around 25 of their teammates. They announced their intention to stay, to "see this thing through," and to show "honor." Yeah, I'd say there is pressure right now within the group to not be the first one to crack.
Noticeably absent from the press conference was Silas Redd.
The pressure to stay will eventually dissipate as reality kicks in. These kids can transfer at any time over the next 4 years. From a practical standpoint, it is too late to transfer today because camp starts in 2 weeks and depth charts are mostly set. I think you will see much more movement starting in early 2013, once the 2012 season is over, especially if PSU has a lousy February LOI Day. The kids can take 5 visits, they can enjoy the recruiting process all over again.
Most of the seniors, if not all of them, will stay. Where are they going to go? Each NCAA team might have ONE guy, maybe two, that could leave, head to another school with a different playbook and a different scheme, and start immediately and be an impact player over everyone else on the depth chart. How many players does PSU have that can do that? besides, the only impact for PSU this season will be the bowl game. They will be on TV as scheduled so Seniors can still make it to the NFL without much trouble. Frankly, it doesn't make a lot of sense for a Senior to transfer this season. Today's press conference was a dog and pony more than a show of strength. The real test is keeping the Juniors and underclassmen.
Brent Musberger was on PTI yesterday and he thinks the NCAA overstepped its bounds and should wait for the criminal portion to play out. I see what he's saying and could even agree that waiting a bit until a greater story is out may have been more wise, but I still believe that what they did levy was weak.
Kevin Blackinstone said the NCAA should have required that all member institutions should have voted on readmission/continued membership at their next meeting.
And then Mark Emmert in his words talked about not letting football take over like that -- has anyone called him out because it's the NCAA, BCS, Bowl $$$ that has created that. It's not just a PSU thang, dawg, in case he isn't aware.I have nothing else to say at this time.

For all the grief the NCAA's taken in recent years for its impotence, this was a great step toward taking more control of college football.Originally posted by Parrot Head View PostESPN is reporting that he is meeting with your buddy Lane today, so any possible travel could have hindered him being there.
