In general, we are woefully uniformed on how to deal with such circumstances. Which is unfathomable to me because sexual abuse is so pervasive in our society.

There is no excuse for Paterno or McQueery but, by the same measure there is no excusing the institution, as well as the community. Penn State university and the city of State College enabled and empowered Paterno's regime. This is an incredibly tragic situation and we would all do well to be more careful about what we say about anyone involved, even Sandusky. His actions are indefensible. However, speaking as a 'survivor' vitriol in any form, directed at any one is not helpful. It will only feed an unquenchable flame that will burn inside the victims for the remainder of their days.
There is nothing personal about it. I am reacting to the logic Jacob has expressed in this thread regarding the events in question. If you or anyone else have a problem with my logic, have at it.

This is a deeply disturbing and highly emotional topic. Anyone who posts in this thread should have a thick skin and be prepared for passionate responses. It's the nature of the territory in this case.

I agree, however to some, relationships with Paterno and B1G membership is a bigger deal...

        • They need to have a clean sweep of the entire coaching staff after this season. Watching the game, whenever they show any of the coaches and put up a graphic showing how long they've been at the school and I can only think about how much they knew and what they failed to do. No matter what they knew, that cloud is going to be over the program until they are gone.

The situation is awful, of course, but it's nice to see some good come out of it.

No offense, but child molesting isn't the kind of problem that throwing money at will do much of anything to solve. Penn State will not buy absolution this cheap. They won't be able to buy it at all.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

I didn't see anything in there about his dad getting raped, I guess at Penn State being poor and getting raped by a nasty old man are the same thing.

Apparently, there was a sentiment to not play this game. I agree. It should not have been played. +1 to Pelini for saying so.

I see it differently. Canceling or boycotting the game does not achieve much. Would it make the victims feel any better? Maybe, but that's debatable. I think PSU and Nebraska handled moving forward and playing the game about as well as could be expected with raising awareness about child abuse and expressing concern for the victims.

There was similar sentiment after the JFK assassination and not playing the Oklahoma-Nebraska game. But the game was played as scheduled.

And there's a big difference between boycotting a game and having the game canceled. That's why I stated that suggesting that Nebraska would boycott the game is idiotic unless Jim Delany and the Big Ten got involved and decided to cancel the game. There was no way Nebraska was going to boycott the game which would further embarrass Penn St. There's too much respect between the programs for that to occur.

                          • Locke on the local radio was talking about this Friday - and starting talking about the support for Paterno in Happy Valley and the dangers of group think.

He got a local on the radio who is originally from PA and who responds that it is even more dangerous to judge what happened without having all of the information, and who states that it is great to have folks supporting JoePA, Penn St., etc.

He says that because he is from PA, he is better connected and knows more about what "really" happened than Locke could possibly know. This in spite of the fact that he hasn't actually read the grand jury indictment or any of the testimony. And let's be honest - love him or hate him, one thing Locke does well is research and read EVERYTHING. Well, that and come up with irrelevant facts that no one knows or cares about, but that doesn't apply to this situation.

The local caller's final big argument in his attempt to shut down Locke is to state that no one actually knows who was in the shower with Sandusky - and the best they can come up with is that the GA "thought" he looked like a 10 year-old. But no one ever confirmed his identity or age. So...maybe it really wasn't a 10 year-old...

Yea...I want Sandusky to use that for his defense in court. I'm sure it would carry the day.

I would find myself torn on this.

Part of me feels like cancelling the game would've been the best choice. I don't think it was a fair representation of how good of a team Penn St. is - there is no way they played their best or even prepared their best after the week that they've been through.

That said - if it were me, I wouldn't wanted to play. I would've wanted a distraction from the circus. Something else to focus my mind on. And let's be honest - for Penn St. this season is now over. They are just going through the motions to finish out the year as the wonder what is going to happen next with all of the talk of everything from no football next year to completely cleaning house with the AD and football coaches.

I feel bad for the players - they deserve better than this. But really, there is no way around it.

I think that Penn St. should petition the NCAA to allow players to transfer without penalty. And I say that as one who doesn't see the HC (or any coaching job) there as toxic. I think going in I wouldn't be afraid to take the approach of not allowing the dishonor of some individuals to tarnish the honor of the majority of the students, faculty, and school. This will hang over them for a time and identify with their past - but it doesn't have set their future.
