You don't choose to be a leader. You either are or you're not. I got off the Heaps bandwagon when I realized what little mental toughness he had. This transfer confirms it.

I wish him well, and hope that marriage matures him a bit. I also hope his parents move the hell away from him and leave him alone. I think they're a big part of the problem.

I agree. Chose was not the appropriate word, but I also think people can become a leader at any time. Heaps may change into a leader. We'll see..

There's undoubtedly more to that story, but I have heard a lot of bad shit about Doman over the years.

"He was so heavily recruited coming in," Doman said. "The expectations were so high that it put him on a pedestal real quick, even in our locker room. He was too young to be on that big of a pedestal and it was too hard to manage."
No it wasn't too hard to manage. If you thought that he was too young and expectations are too high, red shirt his ass and take the pressure off.

Regardless of what is said about Jake or Riley, our coaching staff botched this. This is all on them.

Is there a possibility that Heaps was promised he wouldn't have to red shirt?

What is the 'this' to which you refer? The lack of developmment? The decision to transfer? Smothering expectatons? Persoally I dont think you can say that ALL of any of that is on the coaches. I don't think the coaches are blameless, but I also dont think that Heaps paid as much attention to improving himself as he did to reading about his prowess.
              PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Bungling the QB position at BYU. If I understand you, Heaps wasn't really interested in improving, although throughout high school he has worked with professionals to improve his game. Apparently he figured he didn't need anything to improve on in this scenario and what I am trying to say is if Jake is red shirted from the beginning and developed correctly, we aren't in this position.

Does Jake have blame? Yes he does, but it started down the road in the wrong direction because of coaching decisions.

I have a hunch that to get Heaps they had to promise not to redshirt him. I agree that a freshman redshirt would have been the best thing for Jake.

Jake Heaps is a 20 year old unpaid player dealing with a 34 year old Doman and 45 year old coach, neither of them, admitedly, have his best interest ahead of the interest of the team. These fully-grown men, one of which gets paid almost a million dollars each year, were in the position of basically determining whether Jake Heaps becomes a multi-millionaire or not. If Heaps felt there was anything personal in their calculus, and those paid, fully adult men, didn't have the interpersonal skills to salvage the relationship, then he did the right thing by walking away. Even if it wasn't anything personal, how can you blame a 20 year old kid for reevaluating his options?

I guess I can kind of see that, but how can everyone that said there is no way they would promise him a red shirt next year just conveniently say he was promised not to be red shirted before arriving.

And lets say that is the case, what happens when you get in fall camp and there is no seperation between Jake and Riley and you sit him down and redshirt him. He transfers? Well look where we are now.

In fact it took place during our game when they pulled Gilbert for a 2 QB system with McCoy and Ash.

Garrett Gilbert is transferring out of Texas similar to Heaps. He came in in 2010 in the BCS game and did fairly well while McCoy was hurt. Then he started the following season at Texas. He did not have a stellar year and had to compete against McCoy and Ash for the starting job this year. The was pulled in the BYU game after he was boo'd.. He then had surgery and made the decision to leave..

Texas could of stuck with him in the BYU game but Texas "like" BYU and any other program has a "Win Now" mentality and I have no problem with BYU pulling Heaps in the USU game much like Texas did to Gilbert.

Riley came in and got the win and did everything he could to get the job while Heaps failed to show his improvement (Methinks he was done with BYU once he was pulled and he saw the writing on the wall.).

I think the difference here is Texas fans got behind the QB and never looked back on Gilbert. While BYU fans (Much like the Team) has been divided on Heaps vs. Riley. This may be because Heaps was a 5* recruit (Blah Blah Blah) and Riley was not and people are looking at "What could of been" and "What if's". I don't see the point. I like that we got 9 wins and I like to see what will happen with Riley getting all the rep's and the team now fully behind him and this HS drama now removed..

But BYU is like any other program that has top recruits leave at some point. It is what it is.. BYU wanted to win and they faced lots of problems (Beyond just one other game). If they keep Heaps and he loses to USU how does the team respond to the coaches and the rest of the season. The future was unknown (No matter how many of you predict Heaps would of won those games.. One thing was for certain. The Team was not behind Heaps.. Many can blame Riley or Bronco but the fact of the matter is Heaps has to own up to the fact he did not step up as a leader on the off season.

All are to blame and now the divorce is final.. I will not care about the What if's or think the future is doomed (Man, this place is like doomsday much like when BO left.). BYU will do fine just like we did when BO left..

All is well... All is well..

The other potential parrallel to the Texas QB that you didn't mention, most of Texas' fans have given up on Ash/Mccoy after their dreadful performances for most of the year and are looking to the 5 star true freshman coming in next year to unseat them, which he will be given the chance.

I am just not close enough to the program to really know what is going on. I read these things about Doman and I wonder how it is possible that a guy could act like he supposedly acts and still be made the OC at his age. I look at heaps and some of the stories I hear about him and think he probably spent too much time worrying about his career instead of building it. But I have nothing but only barely informed speculation. Some of you guys have 'sources' and I have to rely on them. But I am the guy in the stands that buys some tickets and some gear and follows along but, at the end of the day, doesn't lose any sleep over it, and it appears to me there is likely blame to go around to everyone on this. But I admit I really have no idea.

Lots of irony here (not necessarily directed at you). Remember when Heaps and Riley were battling for the starting spot in 2010? Almost all observers here were adamant that the BYU coaches would have to be complete idiots not to start Heaps over Riley. Now many are complaining that they botched it by playing him too early. Isn't hindsight wonderful?

It is one thing for a player to transfer when they don't get enough playing time and feel their legitimate NFL goals are in jeopardy. I have no problem with that transfer.

But it is another thing to say that BYU is the Lord's University, that you have been called by God to attend BYU and to bring glory/increase to the Lord's Church by your performance on the football field--it is another thing to spend years selling this story to other recruits and fans and to then turn your back on all of it and transfer because you sucked it up on the field and were replaced.

Heaps pretended to be primarily about building up BYU. Then he left because he wasn't good enough to be the star. This smacks of being inconsistent to me.

                                Oh well. Good luck Jake.
