I think what he's saying is that ALL of the players deserve a shot. And why does Heaps deserve one more than any of the others?

Jake was in the drivers seat and couldn't make things go. Whether that was the fault of the OL, RB's, OC, or someone else - who knows. They all potentially contributed to Heaps' poor play this year.

But the overall goal of the game is to win. And Nelson is doing that.

To be honest - when you consider that there are more than 100 players on the team, and what - maybe a third of those get much playing time? I feel a little bad for all of the guys who will never get into a real game to show what they could do. There are how many QB's on the team? And how many usually play in a game? In a season? You just know that most are never going to get on the field. So why should Heaps be more special than any of the others?

I hope the kid is frustrated, works hard, figures out what has caused his poor play, and comes back with a vengeance to be the best QB BYU has ever seen. But I figure he's got to earn it by more than being hyped as a recruit and playing well in some practices. Maybe some of the other players should get a shot too...

I have no idea. With the exception of Jay Miller I found TBS more myopic than CB. I ditched when my subscription ran out.

I did like Gman and Talo.

If Jake redshirts next season, he will have the opportunity to take over the team as a junior. Or, iow, about the time most kids should be taking over the team.

If he transfers, adios. We want guys that want to compete.

I disagree that nobody would take him. Lots of big time schools are paper thin at QB and jake has enough potential to force some OC to take a chance and hope to coach him up in a system that makes sense. Given his current woes, I am not saying he would land a starting spot at a top gig, but I would imagine he lands at a pretty decent school.
He is going to have to compete for a job wherever he goes. It isn't going to be easy at any decent program. If he redshirts and sticks it out he will be competing against a redshirt freshman when he is a Junior. This is probably the easiest competition for Jake out there.

No. That isn't what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that he did win the starting job. He showed he had what it takes in practice to start. Then when he had his chance to start, he did diddly-squat, unless you count being one of the worst QBs in FBS this year. He *had* his shot, someone else now deserves a shot. If anything, he should be made to work harder to get the same shot he had, given the fact he squandered his first shot so badly.

I do not get the kid glove treatment people give this guy. He was already given a shot and he f*ed it up. Why does this mean he deserves another shot above someone else? He doesn't! He should be put last in the depth chart for QB and given clear and concise expectations he will have to meet to move up. If he moves up the depth chart, like normal players have to do, then he can start. This special treatment shit for Heaps only enables his ego and won't help him as a person anymore than it will help the team.
Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

Agreed. At this point it doesn't make a ton of sense for him to transfer unless he finds the situation untenable from a personal standpoint. Maybe he hates the coaches now, maybe students are giving him crap, giving his wife a hard time, stuff like that. I don't know.

If this kid has NFL mettle, let alone D1 mettle, then he is going to go bananas this offseason getting ready for camp....Tae Bo every morning, Sit and Be Fit every evening, you name it. This is adversity. How does he respond?

One real problem for Jake that goes beyond the passing...his inability to scramble like Riley. You can't teach that because that is mostly instinct and natural athleticism. jake doesn't seem to possess it, at least not like Riley has it. Does everyone remember the montage in Happy Gilmore....Happy keeps winning and rising in the standings and Shooter is growing more and more frustrated. He sneaks off into the woods and tries several times to imitate Happy's bizarre driving technique, only to fail miserably every time. I kind of wonder if Jake isn't off in a happy place somewhere, trying to learn how to "scramble" around and do what Riley does when the pocket starts to collapse and nobody is open yet. The problem is that you can't really practice that.

Hopefully Jake can continue to improve. I'm still hopeful.

This. If Jake's goal is to play in the NFL, I think BYU is the best place for him to get that shot. Doman has played a role in getting two other qbs there and my guess is while Doman shares some of the culpability in Jake's struggles this year, he still is more familiar with where Jake needs to improve than any other coach.

It must be a real blow to this kid's ego to be counting on a pro career and then find yourself not even being able to start for your college team.

Agree. In addition, I get the impression Doman is a big Jake Heaps fan and as such will go out of his way to give Jake every chance he can justify, to succeed at Byu.

Besides that my system cannot digest the desecration of the number 9 by a BYU qb. That is just not right.

His dad should have taught him the simple truth that no matter how big, fast, strong, smart, or good you are, there is always at least one person bigger, faster, stronger, smarter or better than you.

Actually. That's not a comment on Heaps at all. Not even a little bit. Heaps wasn't even part of the conversation.

And why all this silly talk about Heaps transferring? There has been no indication that he's interested in transferring and there is no indication that he can't win back the starting job. Where is this coming from?

I'm surprised a military guy like you would have such admiration for the one person who was happy to announce to the world that he blatantly ignored the Honor Code. Or is this some sort of vicarious admiration on your part? Kind of you wishing you were him?

Didn't something like this happen to your favorite number 9? Or was he just asked to redshirt so Marc Wilson could start?
