The following applies only if Riley stays healthy through this season and maybe the first two games next season.

In the case of Jake Bronco is going to have to commit to that redshirt year after this season and stick to it throughout the season. Lark, Munns, or Hill then becomes the backup. Might get real interesting if Hill can beat out Lark. I've seen some highlights and the kid is freakishly athletic for a QB. Well at least freakish for a kid from the 208.

You can tell in interviews that Bronco and Doman are treating the Heaps situation with kid gloves. They know there's a chance of a transfer and it's obviously in their best interest to head it off.

Now we get to see of which kind of mettle Jake is made. If he realizes that he needs work and trusts the coaches to get him to the next level then he stays. Sitting a year will do Jake a lot of good from a maturity perspective. I'd love to see how Jake does after having for two years like a classic BYU QB. I think we would get to see the Jake we all hoped for. No this plan is not going to get him into the NFL after his sophomore year but it may just be the best for him.

If Jake decides his predicament is everyone's fault but his own he transfers. He will be doing himself a disservice because he will never get into a BCS program that is on par with BYU. The bigs will take one look at this season's film and pass on him. The Washington State's of the world will want him. If he transfers then he was never really our kind of QB. He then becomes Ben Olsen.

I hope Jake sticks around and pushes through the adversity. I want to see him succeed and get his shot at the NFL. Even if he ends up not being NFL caliber I think the journey could really help him on a personal level.
He needs the family support and kick in the butt Chambers got.

Now this is my opinion and I know most disagree. However, there is a kid who gutted it out despite getting shit on.

We will get the over on CB on how BYU and Bronco made this kid a man. The credit should go to the kid and his mom.

    • From the over-the-top comments that Heaps displayed early in the season, I do not see him staying. Maybe he's made of sterner stuff, but I don't think he'll stick around once it is clear he will not be starting next year. I think he's hoping for an injury to Nelson this year to be given the reins again. In the off-season I will be more surprised to hear that Heaps is staying than to hear he is leaving. I just haven't seen the mentality and maturity from Heaps that lends me to believe he'll weather adversity well at all.

Just because he transfers wouldnt mean that he thinks its everyone else fault. That is a little narrow in view. I would transfer if I thought I could get myself in a better situation to succeed. And yes, there are better systems and coaches out there to prepare a guy for the NFL than ours that he would be welcomed into.

If he is the starter this year and next, I think it is pretty close to a given. Maybe just a few series, or a half, or a game, but there is little chance he makes it through this year and next without missing some time.

Really? If Jake transfers I see him not placing a lot of blame on himself and a lot on the coaches.

What schools are going to take him?

"He's a football player and he's not afraid of contact, he's not afraid to take a hit, he's very composed, he's also super-competitive, and our team likes that."

"It's one of his strengths as a quarterback, when elements like that do happen (referring to the play at OSU), he bounces up and isn't afraid of whoever hit him, no matter if he's outsized or not, puts on his helmet and plays again."
If that isn't a comment on Heaps and his fear of getting hit, I don't know what is.

              • If Jake isn't given a real shot in the offseason to compete for the QB job I could see him transferring, I think he deserves atleast that much but our fans are pretty brutal and would probably disagree.

Why does he deserve it? He's had two seasons now to show what he can do, why does he "deserve" anything? If anything, I'd say the other people that haven't had a shot deserve a shot more than a guy that had it and squandered it.

He did nothing at the end of last year or the offseason to deserve any consideration for competing for a starting job? You can say he's shown nothing this year consistently but it is a little much when you start saying last year was terrible also.

I'm all for Jake sticking around and living up to his potential. If Riley continues to play well and stays healthy I do not think it's brutal if people expect him to go into spring with the job in hand.

I was on TBS when his mom was posting. She developed quite a cult of personality over there. You literally could not say a thing critical of Jake and not have virtually everyone jump on you with both feet. I'm not sure she's not part of Jake's problem.

With that said I thought she was quite nice.

                        • does Jakes mom still post at TBS? What does she say?

If Jake redshirts next season, he will have the opportunity to take over the team as a junior. Or, iow, about the time most kids should be taking over the team.

If he transfers, adios. We want guys that want to compete.

I disagree that nobody would take him. Lots of big time schools are paper thin at QB and jake has enough potential to force some OC to take a chance and hope to coach him up in a system that makes sense. Given his current woes, I am not saying he would land a starting spot at a top gig, but I would imagine he lands at a pretty decent school.

TBS and parents is an interesting place. They treated Kessler (something like that) Dad like a guru of guru's. Then when the crap came down , they treated the guy like shit.

                            • Of course other schools would be interested in Jake. All he has to tell them is that he had no QB coach, and a rookie OC who had never OC'ed before, not even participated in game planning.

Yeah it's silly to think that no BCS program on par with BYU would want him. I think there are a half dozen Pac-12 teams that would take him including Utah.
