Is this the part where I misspell Ute and post a picture of Kyle giving one of his players a colonoscopy? Jake is gone. I hope the kid succeeds, but if not, oh well. I'm moving on.
Riley will be the starting quarterback for the bowl game and (if healthy) for all of next season. His limitations have been discussed ad nauseum, I'm more interested in his strengths. I was listening to a podcast while running today, where the discussion turned to St. Tebow. Listen from the 7:00 to 10:00 mark and substitute Nelson's name for Tebow and see how much of this applies to BYU. I think Riley possess 3 of the 4 qualities, Simmons says a QB needs- If he could improve on his not turning it over he could do all 4 (at JV level to Tebow's varsity)
The B.S. Report: 12/5 Part 2 - ESPN
FTR: I never served with Tim Tebow. I don't know Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow is not a friend of mine. But I'm in no way implying Riley Nelson is Tim Tebow.

I have surprised myself with how easily I have altered my own bias regarding Nelson with the news of the Heaps transfer. Previously, I held a bias against Nelson. Part of it quite rational, but part of it irrational, by which I mean that I can't fully explain how the bias came about.
I was still hoping the Heaps would be the full-time starter, and tried to suppress an evil hope that kept popping into my head--that Nelson would get injured. But almost the moment I heard that Jake transferred, everything changed. I am no more biased against Riley. I am all aboard the bandwagon. Sure, I still recognize his deficiencies, but I also see his positives much more brightly.
This all surprises me because I like to think of myself as a cold and objective in my analysis and prone to stubbornly hold to my assessments longer than I should. The human mind is an interesting thing.
To those of you stubbornly holding to your anti Nelson bias, I say, good for you. But give it up. Stop predicting gloom. Life is often more pleasant as an optimistic homer.

Nelson will do OK. I am more worried about how Lark or the other backup will perform for half the games next year when Nelson gets hurt...because he will get hurt there is no doubt in my mind. So far he has been hurt in each of the seasons in which he got meaningful snaps.Originally posted by Jacob View PostI have surprised myself with how easily I have altered my own bias regarding Nelson with the news of the Heaps transfer. well he didn't get any meaningful action against the first 4.5 teams we played. So he missed 1.5 games from a total of 7.5 that he planned to play in. He missed 20% of the games where he was pegged as a starter due to injury this year.Originally posted by Jacob View PostBut he only missed 1.5 games this year, right?Dyslexics are teople poo...

Hear, hear... I silently wished for Heaps to take us to the mountain top as well, and saw Nelson as a guy stealing his reps and hampering his progress, but that has all changed. Nelson is the guy with balls of steel who has never been given anything without having earned it. He took a risk transferring away from the comforts of USU and a comfortable first string QB position for fame and glory of a higher kingdom. He rode the pine behind the Anointed One and when his chance came, put Utah State away in a hot minute of exciting BYU QB heroics not seen since 4th and 18.Originally posted by Jacob View PostTo those of you stubbornly holding to your anti Nelson bias, I say, good for you. I loved the high five vs TCU and the kid plays football the way I like to think I'd play if I was in his shoes: competitively, to have fun, and to win. I know he can't throw the ball, but he does show improvement from game to game and I love that. I got Nelson's back."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

My bias for Riley will leave if he goes undefeated next year or has a one-loss season that gets us into a BCS game.
