UPDATE: Lya Wodraska of the Salt Lake Tribune says that salary could be an obstacle in hiring Norm Chow, who supposedly made $640,000 all told last year. Utah's highest paid assistant coach was defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake, whose base salary was just $170,000. Wodraska suggests that even if Chow has an understanding with Whittingham, he may wait to be fired by Rick Neuheisel -- so he can still collect his UCLA salary -- before officially joining the Utes. Of course, if Neuheisel offers to let him stay on as QB coach, the decision would be back in Chow's court. (Unless his contract is specifically for the OC position.)

Also, Jon Gold of the Los Angeles Daily News says that he hears that San Diego State has interest in Chow, but we don't imagine that the Aztecs can pay more than the Utes -- plus, SDSU plays in the Mountain West and isn't Chow's alma mater.

i think su's point is that joining the pac12 has changed utah in a fundamental way that attracts recruits, both players and coaches, rather than just being able to throw around dough more freely.

This morning Hans Olsen was talking about this on the radio. I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing.

He said that he loved the idea of Chow to Utah. From his playing days at BYU, his knowledge of Chow was that Chow was a great recruiter and had a great presence when he went into the home on a recruiting trip. He also had a reputation for playing the best talent and avoiding politics with players.

I just have to say - those are two things that couldn't be further from what I used to hear about Chow. But who knows who is right or wrong.


I think this could be a good pickup for Utah. I think Chow has the capacity to do well, given the opportunity.

I also think that Utah's defense will help out their offense a great deal during the transition.

At SC the best player usually played.

That may have been more Pete than Chow, but more often than not, the best player played.

Pete's rep on that started to change during the Joe McKnight era, though. So who knows.
