Yep. Hopefully our line will move from a finesse approach to more of a smash mouth approach.

This is a good hire IMO. I think the Norm Chow is a good hire too (if true) but not along the same lines as Davis. I've heard good things 2nd hand about him both as a recruiter and coach.

Edit: Those 2nd hand reports were from my only connnection to Minnesota football, since I have no recollection of him in his prior stint with Utah.

Tim Davis was the O-line coach who put together the lines for Jamal Anderson, Chris Fuamatu-Ma'Afala, and some other strong runners. He recruited Jordan Gross, Nate Sybrowski, Doug Kaufusi, Josh Cochran, and a solid group of other linemen (many of whom played in the NFL).

Suffice to say the Tim Davis hire was HUGE!! The last time he coached at Utah was in the bowl game against Wisconsin in 1996, and after that game he became the TE's and Tackles coach at Wisky. The fact that he is a Ute who is returning home makes it all that much better.

          • If Norm Chow is hired, I take back everything I predicted about the Utes finishing no lower than 2nd in the Pac12 next year.

Not that he's bad, its just that he's a known quantity. The other teams have been scheming against him and know how to beat him already. So then Kyle hires him to go up against the same teams who have figured him out already.

            Strange move.

In other news, Chow always coaches the QBs. Is BJ out of a job now?

Actually, this sounds like just what BJ needs - an experienced mentor who can show him how to coach up QBs. Then when Chow leaves in a few years, BJ will be in a much better spot than he is right now.

I think many Ute fans would agree with this. He (BJ) was a loyalty hire (not that being the all-time winningest QB shouldn't count for something but he was months removed from his senior year).

So, Chow would tutor BJ and also coach either TE's or WR's?

It was a bad hire. He didn't have the experience for the job. Sometimes it works see Brandon Doman and sometimes it does not.

My impression from some people was that his Texas connections more than anything warranted him being hired. That seems to have helped but I guess not at the position at which he's coaching just yet.

Maybe not ready for prime time just yet.

                        • According to Ted Miller (who I did not know existed until Triplet, who knows a ton about the PAC12, told me about him), Neuhisel is making noises about keeping Chow.

Sounds like posturing to get Chow to come to some kind of agreement to resign so they don't have to fire him and pay the bulk of his salary. Chow will end up at Utah after all the dancing is done. Mark it down.
                            Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Chow to Utah would be a great move.
