2011 BYU Football Thread

So looking at next years schedule is really interesting. It looked like murderers row early on especially with how BYU was playing and who was on it. Now all of the sudden it looks much more manageable.

at Texas will of course be a very tough game and they will bounce back but they are a 5-7 team with no quarterback.

Oregon State another perrenial tough team is also going to be coming off a 5-7 season.

Ole Miss was 4-8 and they lose Masoli.

Utah at home looks much more winnable next year.

UCF at home is also a winnable game.

Utah State at home is a revenge game that I think we win big.

at Lousiana Tech- win
at Hawaii- toss up
Idaho- win
San Jose State- win
New Mexico State- win

It looks like we could potentially get to 10 wins again next season.

When you look at the beginning of the year for BYU, you think 'that is a brutal schedule to start with', but as you mentioned, all of those teams struggled last year. Don't get me wrong, they are all decent teams...but BYU can make a big splash against big name teams who are in their down years (kind of like Utah at Michigan a few years ago). I think 10 wins is truly possible.

Couldn't be more excited about next year's team -- too bad we have to wait so long to see them play. It seems every unit should be as good or better than this year except probably safety (assuming Reynolds stays). There's not a chance anyone can replace Rich.

Has anyone heard anything about Aguirre's eligibility for next year? Seems like at some point that was in question. Also, any word on how Everett has looked in his redshirt year? We've already heard word that Johnson has looked very good, and I think that bodes well for some secondary depth.

Everett - has looked good but I've heard that maybe he doesn't have the "hips" to be a top CB and might be a candidate to move to safety as a result - again this was just the opinion of someone who's watched a few practices, nothing authoritative

Johnson - apparently looks phenomenal and Logan's not lying when he says the young guys are likely to be better than they ever were

Gaines - in the same picture as Johnson. People talked about him going to safety but apparently his feet and lateral quicks make him more likely to end up at CB. I hope that's the case as I'd rather not have a 5'8 safety.

Seriously - given where we were even in 2006 and 2007 in the secondary it's just ridiculous to see this many able bodies back there.

I'd be fine with Everett at safety. He seems to have the size and speed for it.

Any chance Frazer moves back to safety, or is he too big for it at this point? He's apparently better at pass coverage than anything else from the LBer spot. Maybe he plays a hybrid safety/LBer a little next year in that way that Rich did at times this year?

And there are still two sacrificial lambs to be announced. They just might have 8 home games next year...

I did a search a week or so ago, and here are the teams with open dates that could fit into BYU's schedule as currently constituted:

Syracuse, Wake Forest, Memphis, Indiana, Air Force, TCU, San Diego State, Houston, UTEP, Akron, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Western Michigan, Florida International, La-Lafayette, North Texas, South Alabama, Troy, La-Monroe. Every Div 1AA team (throw a bone to Weber State?)

Mostly crap, but we could offer a taste of ESPN$ to two crappy teams, get them to play on a Thursday or Friday night, and have 8 home games next year.

Ole Miss is a fabulous place for a college game. The rumor down that way is that when General William Tecumseh Sherman got to Oxford he decided Ole Miss University was too beautiful to burn to the ground. I am not really sure if Shermann's Army really got near Oxford, but it is a cool rumor!

The Coeds in cocktail dresses and the lads in khakis, white shirt (an orthodox mormon such as yourself should feel right at home) and tie is a nice touch.

Probably just a rumor as Sherman's scorched earth policy didn't start until after Vicksburg fell. Oxford was already in the Union's hands by then and it was Grant (not Sherman) who entered Oxford. Meridian, Mississippi on the other hand did get the "Sherman treatment".

Oxford is a great college town. Would be a nice place to visit for a football game.

The coaches are extremely excited for next year. Difference makers for both offense and defense have been identified from the scout team that will be immediate contributors. Here are a few names that I was specifically told will have a huge impact on the team:

Drew Phillips - I was told that he is an amazing athlete and will absolutely shock Oregon State, Texas and the Yew. They won't be able to prepare for him. He is a legitimate speed demon. He has scored over 30+ td's against the first team D. They stopped counting.

Ross Apo - Is looking very good and will have a full year of learning the offense under his belt with four years to play after his medical red shirt. He is taller than Hoffman and faster. Who are you going to go after a 6'3 Hoffman or a 6'4 Apo or a speedy Jacobsen? It should be fun to watch.

DeQuan Everett - Will be a major contributor. He is looking good in practice and is extremely fast. He is tall for a corner.

Jordan Johnson - Will contribute but remains to be seen how much. A tremendous athlete from what I was told.

Phillips, DiLuigi, Apo, Hoffman, and Jacobson on the field at the same time will be difficult to guard.

Overall, I am excited to see what Drew Phillips will do on the field. The coaches and administration literally glow when they talk about him. He should be special.

I have no idea who SCougar is, but he's bringing the hype.

I really hope that Apo is the real deal, though I'm already worried about the fact that he's had not only one, but two significant surgeries since coming to BYU. Hope his body holds up.

Good thing we play at least 6 scout teams next year as we will still have some young talent to break in.

I'm also pleased to hear that Gaines has the starters approval. I'll admit that seeing so many seniors in the secondary has me a bit concerned.

Next year is going to be fun to watch.

The good thing is Drew is doing it against the first team defense every week.
