Engemann had way more talent than Riley, but seemed to lack any heart, something which I grant Riley had (often to our detriment). Engemann infuriated me when, on a pick six, he simply watched the guy run it into the end zone without even trying to appear like he wanted to stop the guy.

I don't remember his effort on that play. I'll have to go back and watch. I do remember his effort (or lack thereof) on the pick 6 vs. UNLV.

As a HC Gary Crowton was the personification of being a hemophiliac.

Crowton gets a bum wrap. If the admin. had let him bring in his own staff, things would have been different.

Also if they hadn't forced him to save money by flying in same day to the Nevada game, they could have won the game and the downhill slide wouldn't have started.

He may get a bum wrap and he might not have brought his own staff, but he still was a hemophiliac. Which coach that he was forced to keep from the Lavell staff recommended to not bring a punter to Colorado Springs in 2002?

It is entirely possible that BYU's admin is as inept and meddlesome as you indicate and Coach Crowton was still a very poor HC.

I still think I would have preferred Crowton as an OC to Anae though.

I just can't be too critical of Riley for what happened. I blame the coaches more than I blame Riley, and Riley is right up there for me too. I hated how he played the position, and if I was the coach he'd have never been the QB, but Engemann had all the talent in the world and a 5 cent noggin running it.

There's no reason Engemann shouldn't have been a dominant player at BYU.

Don't you get byu71's thesis yet? Every BYU coach ever was damn near perfect. Any and all faults they have can be laid at the feet of the BYU administration.

Regardless of my mislocations, it appears your talk about eschewing a punter was figurative, not literal. There were 5 turnovers, 4 failed 4th down attempts and 2 punts.

My memory of the game was the ridiculous 4th down failures in locations where it was not orthodox football to go for it on 4th down. My memory of Crowton was he was not very good at figuring out ways to cloture when things were not going well. While I think this contrasts with Mendenhall whose biggest strength, IMO, is to make anything that walks and talks at least average.
