However, I strongly feel that people are undervaluing what the MWC would provide - conference rivalries, conference championships and BCS access.

Obviously we all want the Big12 or Pac10, but that ain't happening anytime soon. IN the MWC BYU could schedule 3-4 quality OOC games every year and then play a regular season that actually means something from a regional rivalry and conference championship perspective. To me this option is much more compelling than playing an independent schedule and yes even good independent schedule like we will have next year.

The TV deal in the MWC is not as good as the TV deal for independence (given the concessions that BSU received I do think it could be close) but as a fan I don't care about the $$. I don't sit on my couch or travel to games to watch stacks of money every Saturday.
BYU would be in the Mountain division of the Mountain West:
    CSU
    Wyoming
    New Mexico
    Utah State
    Air Force
BSU (but they would move to the West division if BYU and another team came on, so probably switch BSU for UTEP)

    Not that great.

Also, when the TV contract gets renegotiated in 2016, BYU would be stuck with whatever the MWC contract is instead of ESPN.

BYU will wait until at least 2016 if they don't get a big 5 invite before they do anything rash.

I wonder honestly who is the bigger TV draw these days, BSU or BYU.

In other words if the opener was Michigan vs BYU or BSU, which would draw the bigger rating.

Assuming that BYU and BSU were identically ranked? BYU.

Nope, it is the opener for ESPN next year. As of right now, nationally who would draw the larger TV audience.

The SLC market is 4x the size of Boise and the LDS market is considerably larger than that. It probably would still be BYU.

Looks good to me especially after you layer in 4 good OOC games and 2 crossover games with a conference championship and BCS opportunity. The TV deal does not worry me too much.

I would agree with you that BYU probably has a lot more "fans" than Boise St.

However, I wonder about the non-BSU or BYU fan who is looking to watch a game. I think the pure football fan looking for a good game would choose to watch BSU play. On the football field they have totally outclassed us over the last 10 years.

I would say if we had their on the field performance and our fan base, we would be in a BCS conference without a doubt.

I thought that was very well stated. What you said about having a good OOC schedule as a conference member is exactly right.

If BYU joined the MWC, it would be a 14 or 16 team league. There are a lot of division options at that point, although I'd have to think that we'd still arrange to play Boise, USU, Hawaii, and AFA regularly. Not sure how it would look though.

                          • A lot of string pulling...this is a great schedule.

The only thing I'd like to see is teams like Texas moved to the 3rd or 4th game of the season and tune up the first couple of games against patsies. In my mind VA is a good second game and ISU is a good first game. Other than that minor nitpick, I really like this schedule.

It works both ways. Texas may be more vulnerable in week 2.

Although the MWC is able to sell tier 2/3 games to other networks which could still be NBCSN, however BYU @ Nevada is probably a tier 1 game for CBSSN to choose.

The @Virgina game is probably on an ESPN network since it's opening weekend and not many other good games to choose from. Houston's game will also be on an ESPN network of some form now that they are in the Big East.

The Nevada series is a nice get for BYU though. They probably forked money out for the 2nd home game, but Nevada has had H-H agreements with PAC-12 schools like Cal.
Thanks for the clarification. It seemed like every Boise State game was on NBCSN; hence, my assumption that was MWC flagship station. Especially since it was the station formerly known as Versus.
