  • 5-7 is disappointing, though not in and of itself alarming.

what’s alarming is that the coaches are clearly losing the team. I’m not sure how that changes unless the coaches change.

    • This is kind of what I expected at this point in the season. I was hoping for a 6 win season. Maybe I didn’t expect the big margins of the losses.

I’m not super concerned about the regression. I think it is expected with people getting banged up as the season goes on and the lack of depth. Everybody has to be physically hurting at this point even those who are cleared to play.

The big surprises this year have been the poor play by the offense from the beginning. Particularly by the Oline. The receivers haven’t been great either as they don’t seem to get open. The qb play was always a question mark coming into the season. I was hopeful that Slovis would work out but didn’t necessarily expect it.

I do think that recruiting needs to improve and that includes upping our nil game. And obviously Funk has to go.

It will be a few years of struggles. There are no easy answers here. I don’t know that any other head coach short circuits that.

BYU hasn't had the resources to build the necessary recruiting infrastructure. That will take time. But the wheels have come off in the second half of the season. BYU is 1-4 in their last 5 games. They have lost by 33, 29, 30, and 32 in those games. Kalani is obviously lost and his post games comments don't conceal that fact.
Who would’ve thought playing an SEC team on the road in preseason and a P5 conference schedule would’ve led to a team, that is lacking legit D1 talent at multiple positions, to struggle as the season progresses?

        Like its shocking!

30 point losses repeatedly are shocking.

Since the BYU / Utah conference divorce BYU has played with a team that consistently has multiple non P5 athletes that have played thousands of in season minutes. This years team has a non D1 QB and about 6 lineman that would be great players at Weber State.

It’s not simply, recruit better, scheme better, or call better plays. BYU is going to have to accept that with their systematic limitations the ceiling is a great run once every 8-10 years. The base is going to be a lot of 5-7 to 7-5 seasons with a few 3-8 and 8-3 seasons thrown in the mix and a lot of growing pains to boot.

I’m open to a solution that doesn’t include KS Id just love to hear who that solution is because the bench of LDS coaches is about 3 deep.

This. I think we need to be honest about what BYU can do at this level, especially anytime soon. What realistic person looked at the schedule this year and honestly saw 6 wins? "The quest for bowl eligibility" is really what I'm ok with going forward year in and year out. Anything above that and I'll be ecstatic. I would imagine that as we do upgrade the recruiting the losses to solid teams will be closer, but I don't pretend we're the new Oklahoma. My hope is to be something like Texas Tech has been over the years. But if we're Kansas (the real Kansas, not this recent aberration) I'm still happier here than always longing to be P5.

It is different being in a real conference. It will take time.
Nah, we will go get your pariah Morgan Scalley.

                  Great choice!

Let’s hire the dude that has been a lifelong Utah fan, played there, and has only worked there to be the HC!

Oh and let’s not mention that he’d be working at a school that already has a disadvantage in recruiting AA players and who himself has dropped the N word with recruits and players. Lol.

If BYU turned into TCU football wise we should all be rejoicing since they transitioned to the B12:

                    7-6
                    4-8
                    12-1
                    11-2
                    6-7
                    11-3
                    7-6
                    5-7
                    6-4
                    5-7
                    13-2
                    4-6

One NC appearance, multiple top 10’s, lots of mediocrity.

He's been groomed to be the heir. While I still think he replaces KWhitt, there's a chance the politically correct folks on the hill will prevent it. Scalley is a very good coach, would restore discipline and accountability, and knows how to work with LDS and non-LDS players. If the U passes him over he just may have a few fishes to fry....

His mistake has largely been lived down. He's a good recruiter and is loved by most of the players.

                        Pretty sure he was kidding.

And the bowl you get in the Big 12 with six wins is still better than what we got as an independent even with ten wins.

I was definitely teasing Funk. However, Scalley is an excellent coach.

Yeah, he is fantastic. I am always jealous of that defense.
