I agree. When Bronco was saying he's going to take as much time as necessary, maybe even until the week before the Washington game, I was shaking my head. Just name Heaps already and start getting the 1's on the same page."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

Jake needs to see as many reps against the #1 defense as possible to get him ready for the season opener. The 2's are not that good. They won't help and the won't get him ready. From a couple of people that I know who are close the program and have watched multiple practices, they think Jake is clearly the better q.b. Name a starter and get him the reps he needs to be successful and he needs as many reps vs. the 1's as possible.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI agree. from what I observed in the scrimmage today, I'm very encouraged by the corps of QBs and receivers we have. RB is the glaring weakness, but I feel much better about things than when, say, Max was "battling" the likes of Jacob Bower and Cade Cooper, who looked terrible in practice. At least we have 3 QBs who can all at least nominally move an offense."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

You look at the numbers w/o knowing and it would be easy to think that Nelson's the freshman and RM upperclassman.Originally posted by MarkGrace View Posthttp://twitter.com/GurneyTBS
Part of me thinks the coaches are trying to keep this thing closer than it is with all the configurations they put together for the QB's.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī

Anyone who watched the scrimmage today that still thinks Nelson is even close to Heaps has no clue what they are talking about and that includes Bronco.
Heaps was clearly superior, he lead the offense on a 99 yard drive and capped it off with a grea deep ball to Jacobsen who was blanketed by Bradley, Nelsons first 3 possessions he was 3 and out.
Also I was paying close attention to progressions, Heaps would go 3-4 each snap if someone was not open and then dump it off to a back, something even Max Hall struggled with last year. Nelson would go 1 maybe 2 and then look to run.
I was really impressed with Jake. I also think that in regards to being a pure QB, Lark is also better than Nelson. Nelson should have a few packages where he comes in to run wildcat and things like that. Heaps should be the starter, and Lark the backup.*Banned*

Heaps clearly won the scrimmage today although I didn't think he played particularly well. Nelson was not good although I thought the refs were too quick on the whistle on a couple of obvious escapes. Lark had a good day. I feel a little bit bad for Nelson. He has really picked up his game and was fantastic yesterday. This scrimmage will probably do him in.
Heaps is probably going to start unless he completely melts down when they start playing something other than a base defense.
The highlight of my day was catching a glimpse of CJ down in front when I was perched up high on the 45 yard line.

One thing I will agree with is that Nelson is at a bit of an unfair advantage because when he goes to his strength (which is getting out of hte pocket and running) its touch football. He is a great athlete and very quick that is for sure. But I thought he struggled throwing the ball today.Originally posted by Shaka View PostHeaps clearly won the scrimmage today although I didn't think he played particularly well. I would have come down but my bro and I were in executive session trying to decide what to do about my dad. No better place than LES to make these kind of decisions.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostOne thing I will agree with is that Nelson is at a bit of an unfair advantage because when he goes to his strength (which is getting out of hte pocket and running) its touch football. When they miss Nelson tends to throw short and Heaps long. The funny thing about today was they were the opposite. Nelson overthrew a bomb and Heaps threw a pass or two short.

I would love to see Lark pass Nelson. Nothing against Riley, I just think that he's a less talented QB than the other guys but seems like a better pure athlete than the rest (and he's undoubtedly an impressive runner), which means he could clearly contribute at another position.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostI was really impressed with Jake. Any chance Bronco is just using Nelson to let the D prep for Locker? And also to keep UW from knowing who to gameplan for? I am just trying to figure out why we we're still doing this back and forth, they're so tight, BS when it is apparent to everyone not named Bronco that it isn't."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

I really think Bronco feels its close. But thats because he has never looked at who the better player is when choosing who to start. He looks at effort, leadership etc. Which is why we will always have guys like Kellen Fowler playing when they should not. For example this is the deepest and most talented receiving corps ever at BYU. Yet instead of Oneill Chambers Ross Apo, Cody Hoffman, Mckay Jacobsen, Spencer Hafoka, and Luke Ashworth getting all the reps with the ones, Bronco gives Matt Marshall, Matthew Edwards, Rhen Brown, and BJ Peterson first and 2nd team reps which really hurts the guys that are actually going to play on Saturdays.Originally posted by Surfah View PostAny chance Bronco is just using Nelson to let the D prep for Locker? I agree with this. I wasn't convince that Heaps was head and shoulders ahead during the spring scrimmage. I was today.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostAnyone who watched the scrimmage today that still thinks Nelson is even close to Heaps has no clue what they are talking about and that includes Bronco.

I agree with Lark. He looked pretty good.
Nelson got happy feet really easily. I think if he were a long term started, defenses wouldn't take that long to figure him out.
They need to move him to a different position.

I know you're just throwing out hypotheticals, but do you (or anyone else around here) really think we have a shot at winning 10 games this year with any QB? I mean, I know the bottom of the MWC sucks, but ...Originally posted by jay santos View PostI'm not a build for the future guy. If Nelson can win you 10 and Heaps can win you 8, I say go with Nelson.
We play 12 games. Our QB situation alone is going to lose us three (FSU, TCU, Utah) and our RB/TE/O'Neill Chambers is delusional/defensive issues are going to lose us another two or three (some combination of Washington, Nevada, Air Force, and Wyoming). I think the best we can do this year is 8-4, with 7-5 or 6-6 more likely.
It's looking like Bronco is going to let Nelson get a lot of PT early on, maybe even the bulk of the PT. Fortunately for Heaps, we'll probably be 2-2 or 1-3 going into the Utah State game, at which point it would be a no-brainer to turn things over to Heaps to see where he can take us. If we're 3-1, with, say wins over good Washington, Air Force and Nevada teams with Nelson at the helm, Nelson might be the starter all year long. But I think we'll be 1-3 or 2-2.
The honor code sucks!
