We play 12 games. Our QB situation alone is going to lose us three (FSU, TCU, Utah) and our RB/TE/O'Neill Chambers is delusional/defensive issues are going to lose us another two or three (some combination of Washington, Nevada, Air Force, and Wyoming). I think the best we can do this year is 8-4, with 7-5 or 6-6 more likely.
I think we can win 10 games. In my mind FSU and TCU are losses with UW and UU being tossups. How well the QB responds to real games and how well the MLBs play will be the deciding factor. No way we go 6-6. I'm optimistic but I see 8-4 being the low with 10-2 not being out of the realm of possibility.

It's looking like Bronco is going to let Nelson get a lot of PT early on, maybe even the bulk of the PT. Fortunately for Heaps, we'll probably be 2-2 or 1-3 going into the Utah State game, at which point it would be a no-brainer to turn things over to Heaps to see where he can take us. If we're 3-1, with, say wins over good Washington, Air Force and Nevada teams with Nelson at the helm, Nelson might be the starter all year long. But I think we'll be 1-3 or 2-2.

        The honor code sucks!
Here's what I don't get. Heaps is apparently getting the bulk of the reps against the first-string defense. Heaps is outplaying Nelson against the first-string defense. Heaps is clearly the better-throwing QB. They don't have to change the playbook for Heaps. Heaps goes through his progressions better than Nelson.

Why are people still thinking Nelson is going to be the starter going into game 1?

From a couple of people that I know who are close the program and have watched multiple practices, they think Jake is clearly the better q.b. Name a starter and get him the reps he needs to be successful and he needs as many reps vs. the 1's as possible.
According to Gurney, Heaps has been getting the bulk of the reps against the #1 defense. 38 passing attempts to about 6.

          I think they've got a starter.

The one player that stood out to me at the scrimmage was #91 Tayo Fabuluje.

He looked pretty good to me and very tough to stop.

Any more detail than that? I really haven't heard much about him other than they really didn't want him showing up to camp at 317 pounds.

I wasn't paying really close attention as I had my three young kids. But the first 2 plays (I believe it was the 2nd series that he got in) he was the guy who broke through and blew up the play to drop the RBs for a loss. He looks huge out there.

He put on about 50 to 60 pounds from last year, so I have a hard time believing that isn't messing with his mobility.

                    • After Saturday, I have a hard time believing anyone is excited about Jake Heaps or Riley Nelson. Neither of those kids played worth a damn. In BYU's system, behind that line, with those receivers, our two leading candidates for QB completed 50% of their passes. Both have to become a lot more efficient or we are going to blow. Now that I've vented, the good news is that this is not unusual this early in fall camp.

From what I've read it sounds like the recievers were a large part of the reason they were at 50%.

Couple of rules I have learned over a long life as a BYU fan. When BYU receivers are hyped as "the best ever for BYU...yadda yadda yadda" expect them to disapoint. When BYU's DL is young and everyone expects it to struggle, expect to be pleasantly surprised.

                              Crap.

I was hoping when I was in Cancun in a couple of weeks that they'd be out...

I am going to assume that you didn't attend the scrimmage? I did, and I thought Heaps was impressive. He threw the ball well. You could also tell that he was making his progressions and check downs. He seemed really comfortable in the pocket, and maybe that is because he knew he wouldnt be hit. I know 10-20 isnt very good, but there were quite a few drops. Foote dropped one that hit him between the numbers, McKay dropped a spot pass, Matt Marshall dropped one on a short crossing pattern, and Rhen Brown dropped a bullet on a comeback route.

Maybe I was alone but I left excited with what I saw. I didnt think Jake would be that far in his progression as a college QB this early in the year.
