I was quite surprised when I walked past him on the field before the spring game errr practice. He looked maybe 5'10 170.

They measured them all officially before the start of practice he came in just a shade under 6'2.

Also Hans Olsen said today that Jason Munns looks awful, he said he has a rocket arm and big body but horrible feet, a horrible delivery and just looked horrendous out there.

But yeah, the fact that he looks so young kind of always catches me off guard. Usually those major prospect types are men when they're 15, which is part of the reason they dominate at the HS level. Heaps just looks like a regular kid, and in a way I think that bodes well for him. Everyone talks about him having less upside because he's very polished, but he still has some physical maturing to do, which will only make him better.

Do you see them up close in person recently? Or how were you able to determine this?

And that doesn't even really happen b/c he has to take a hop and a skip toward his receiver before he releases just to get it there. Nobody listens to me when I say that, but I do not feel good about homeboy's arm. He needs to line up in the wildcat, try his hand at H-back, but QB is a position for people that can throw the ball. there's no doubt that Nelson is an athlete. You just gotta wonder if he would be better used as a slot receiver or as a DB...

That is the primary reason I believe we might see Nelson. I think Doman, subconsciously or consciously, will give Nelson the benefit of the doubt and a more than fair chance to win the starting spot because of the similarities between the two of them.

I was just about to defend Doman and his arm (threw for over 3,500 yards), but then realized that with Luke Staley in the backfield, I'm guessing most teams were going to chance his throws and just attack Luke (good reason for Mahe's 1,200 yards that year too).

But still, I could see Riley putting up similar numbers as Domans 3,500 passing and 740 rushing. It's not very often we get a BYU QB like that... then again, its not very often we get a Freshman like Heaps either. I'm honestly happy with either. Both, I feel, will do really well... granted the offensive playbook I imagine will be very different as to who starts.

Doman definitely made the most out of what he had. I have always thought Doman was an ideal QB to run the U of U's iteration of the spread offense. I think Nelson would be ideal in the same capacity. Good enough arm, great decision maker, true football player. I expect we will see Riley do a lot of read option to make the most of his arm and a lot of horizontal spreading out of the opposing defense. It is easy in college to hide an average arm.

I agree with you that I will be pleased with either Nelson, Heaps, Lark or Munns. They all seem to bring something a little different to the table.

What gets you to the conclusion that Riley is a great decision maker? Certainly not the "one read and run" decisions we saw from him in mop up time last year.

Nelson seems more Lance Pendleton than Brandon Doman to me.
